New York move - Looking for schools

I’m posting this on behalf of my friend who is moving to New York. This is a last minute move so they did not apply for any private schools this cycle.

  • Looking for recommendations on where to start so they can get admissions into a prep school.

  • Open to public schools too. Any recommendations? Open to staying in NJ as well.
    For reference the kids will be rising 9th grader and 7th grader moving from a top private school in Houston. Interested in swimming, tennis, band , quiz bowl and rigorous academics.

  • Any suggestions on a college consultant familiar with New York school systems?

I’m sure other CCers who are more knowledgeable will chime in, but some very high performing school districts in Westchester include Scarsdale, Edgemont, Chappaqua, Bronxville. There are a bunch on Long Island and New Jersey too. Guessing New Canaan CT would be worth investigating as well.
