New York or California...

I feel like I keep posting the same stuff. So, I'm military and out in less than a year. I'm debating between staying in California, or going to school in New York. Right now, im really leaning toward New York, for a fresh new environment and new experience.

I'm a CA resident, born and raised. But I feel I really need a change of environment, a new beginning almost. I know a lot about CA schools, but not too sure about NY schools. I'm really thinking about NYU, with plans of either Medical, Business and/or Leadership.

I just feel I need a real change, and for college it would be a perfect beginning.

Thoughts/advice/schools to look into? Thanks and appreciate the help

Do you need financial aid?

If so, NYU will not likely be affordable, unless you get a large merit scholarship. It does not have a good reputation for need based aid.

California has lots of colleges that are likely to be suitable, as well as being a change of scenery from where you currently live in California (Humboldt, Santa Cruz, San Jose, Santa Barbara, Fresno, and Los Angeles are all different).

I have a free ride, plus GI Bill for financial.,

As far as california, I’ve lived in Nor Cal, So Cal and in between. I’ve lived in SF, LA and SD.

It would be a huge change, across the country, so it would be a big commitment. But I feel I really need to.

Are you planning to attend under the post 9/11 GI Bill? You understand that covers tuition and fees at Public Colleges/Universities? NYU is a private school - for private schools they allot $17,500 towards tuition and fees (NYU tuition/fees are currently >$40k per year.

I am doing post 911. I know they award for the highest state school. Money is not an issue.

I will also be making a good amount from BAH (living allowance basically). Is it crazy to attend NYU? And basically start my life fresh?

I would start in spring 2013. One way trip train ticket, sea bag on my back, any important papers, and head to NY to start my new life…

How would the cost difference (especially in terms of student loans) come out between NYU and UC/CSU schools? Are you considering other schools in New York as well?

If your goal is medical school, you want to consider that medical school is expensive, so minimum debt and maximum savings in undergraduate is desirable as a pre-med.

UC/CSU would be cheaper as I am a CA resident. NYU is part of the Yellow Ribbon Program. They will match a certain amount to the Post 911 GI bill. I believe its 7000$. I personally would not have to pay for anything, due to my free ride from my father.

I haven’t done too much indepth research on other NY schools. NYU, from what I hear is pretty artsy, but prestigious and offer a lot of different majors and such. I know most UC and CSU offer the same.

Right now, I’m not dead set on a major yet. But am very open to possibilities. Medical, leadership and/or business is what I’m interested in. I wouldn’t mind dropping everything and starting new in NY.

Note that NYU does not really have a traditional campus, but some students are attracted to it because of its location in New York City.

Would you be trying to be admitted as a freshman or transfer?

If you have any questions about NYU, admissions, financial aid, etc. feel free to PM me.

I would apply to both NY and CA schools and base my move on admission decisions.

Look at USC

^ i’d apply to both schools as well. It seems from your posts like you have this ‘start fresh’ feeling. I say go for it. Just plan out all your finances in advance. It sounds like you know your stuff, so you should be good. Idk how much your dad has saved up, but if you know he has more than enough it shouldn’t be a problem. The reason everyone keeps emphasizing this is that NYU is notoriously bad for leaving students with high amounts of debt. Great school, but lots of debt.

I’m not sure how long you’ve stayed in LA, or any of the other cities for, but one thing i can tell you is that, as someone who’s lived here his whole life, there’s always more to discover here. You could probably get a ‘fresh start’ just litterally moving on the opposite side of the city (i basically did) I wouldn’t doubt if it worked that way for the other cities as well (SF and SD.) Just something to consider. But if you’re sick of cali, i say go for it. Best of luck.

I should be coming in as a non traditional student. I will be applying to NYU, USC, a UC or two and probably another NY school.

Correct me of I’m wrong, but I do believe NYU has classes all over the place, not just a central campus, which also interests me a lot.

Appreciate all the help and info ladies and gents. NYU2013, PM in bound.
