Newhouse and other questions

Hi, I'm considering applying to Syracuse for Newhouse because it's near the top of my list of schools i want to go to (it's not THE top because i've never seen snow in my life and am a bit iffy about the weather there). I have a couple of q's regarding applying, and the school itself, etc...

Anyone know if an interview is necessary to get into Newhouse? im an international though...

how are the students/professors/classes?

**easy to get internships/job opporunities? **Syracuse is a bit far from NYC....or any other major media outlets for that matter

How easy is it to get in? Im the chief editor of my school's newspaper, i helped to initiate the school's online edition of the newspapr, and i've interned with a prestigious newspaper (and published!). I also went to NSPA workshop in the summer of my freshman year, and was one of 3 studnets representing my school. My expereience is mostly print journalism though. Our school doesn't offer any thing else, but i'd like to apply as communications-undecided.
stats-wise though, i'm only a 3.65, 1320/1600. **Is that good enough for Newhouse?

hopefully theres someone there that can answer some of these q's! thanks :)

I'm not a current student, but am applying to Newhouse. I will try my best to answer your questions.

An interview is not required to apply to Newhouse or any other school. They recommend interviews, but for people who live far away and don't have alumni representatives in their area (like you and me), it is perfectly okay to not do an interview.

I can't really answer this question as I'm not a student at SU. Although, I have heard that the professors at Newhouse are some of the best in the communications field.

After my visit to Syracuse and Newhouse, I can confidently say that interships and job opportunities are plentiful. Something like 94% of Newhouse students have jobs upon graduation, and the average amount of interships completed for a Newhouse student upon graduation is around 4. I'm not sure about the rest of the SU community, but since you seem to be interested in Newhouse specifically, I wouldn't worry about it.

Newhouse is quite competitive, and it is much harder to get into Newhouse than other SU departments. That being said, you sound like you have a pretty nice shot of acceptance. I believe that average SAT score for Newhouse is 1300 (so that puts you a little above average, which is good). I also think that the average GPA is 4.0 (but I'm pretty sure that is a weighted GPA)...so if you've taken any honors/AP classes then you should be fine there as well. You also have a lot of prior experience in communications/journalism, which Newhouse will really like. I think you've got a good shot.

Hope that helps! Just remember that these are estimates on my part as I am not in any way connected to the school.
