I was wondering how Newhouse compared to other schools' communications programs. I am also looking at the University of Miami (FL), GW, and NYU. If any current students chose Newhouse over any of these other schools, can you tell me why? Thanks!

I personally believe that Syracuse is academically better than the other schools that you mentioned for communications. It is much higher ranked in communications and has stronger placement in this area.

However, college is about fit. If you don't like cold weather, Syracuse would be horrible choice. If you don't like living in a city and not having school spirit and a campus, NYU would be horrible choice. You need to visit the schools and decide for yourself.

Syracuse and Northwestern U are ranked #1 in the country...but apply and go where you feel comfortable. So other good programs are U-Missouri and USC but Syracuse and Northwestern and most-known and have oustanding alumni connections in major cities like NYC, DC, Philly, and Chicago.

My daughter was accepted to both University of Miami and NYU (both for journalism), with a very nice scholarship to Miami, and also accepted to University of Missouri Columbia with a scholarship, and Lehigh with a the Rodale scholarship, and chose Newhouse. The reason I mentioned the scholarships was just to let you know what she gave up to go to Newhouse. She's a freshman there this year. She did not get into Northwestern/ I'll ask her to give you her reasons for choosing Newhouse; she checks cc often. And being from Florida, the weather was a concern....but so far she doesn't mind it.

^^^see! it's all in what you want..Syracuse is ranked higher than those others in communications though..so if you don't mind the weather or some other things...it's a pretty great place to be.

In case you didn't get it, I'm ThreeKids's daughter. Here's the long version of what my mom posted:
By the time I had to make a decision on which school to attend, to be honest, Syracuse was the only one I even liked. I'm not liberal enough or independent enough to choose NYU. Plus, their J program isn't so great, though all around it is a great school. Once I heard about Lehigh's partying reputation, that was totally out of the question. I'm not a recluse or anything, I just didn't want to be at one of the biggest party schools in the country. Miami I only applied to bc ThreeKids made me. Mizzou- sure it's top 3, but if you decide at some point you'd like to do more than Journalism, you're out of luck. Plus I like being surrounded by ambitious/motivated/academic kids with all different interests, not just journalism. Plus I really don't think I could stand being in misery- sorry, Missouri- for 4 years, I'm a little more city-ish (and incredibly corny).
I'm very happy at SU, but I still wish I had gotten into Northwestern. If you can handle the rigorous academics there, then it really is a great place to be. However, Newhouse has fantastic connections, probably the best in the country, so that sets it apart. It's definitely trade school- as opposed to higher education- but the art/sci requirements give you the liberal artsy feel you might want.

^^Thanks so much for that comment--it was really informative! I'm looking into Syracuse for print journalism as well, among a ton of others, just to see what kinds of merit aid might come my way, etc.

..not sure I can deal with the incredible cold, though, to tell you the truth.

Can you double major in something in Newhouse and something in arts&sciences?

^yes you can...but nothing too demanding

Actually the program is created so that you double major in artsci. In fact, we are required to take at least a minor in a different school. My roommate is even trying to triple major (newspaper or mag journalism, poli sci, women's studies). Here's how it all breaks down:

36 credit max in Newhouse
60 credit min in Art Sci
18 credits to play with

There are required areas for classes in art sci (writing intensive, language, quantitative skills, lab science, humanities, social sciences, random additions). A lot of credits overlap.

It takes 30 credits to get a major in Newhouse

It takes 18 credits to get most minors

AP credits are lifesavers, study hard, collect those 4s and 5s.

If another current student finds a flaw in this, or if my math is shoddy, I wouldn't be shocked, but that should cover the basics.

Hm. Neat. I wanted to triple major myself actually. Newspaper or magazine journalism, poli sci, & history. Or something like that. But yeah, thanks. Let me know if your roommate decides it's too much to take on :).

I listed my majors as magazine journo for newhouse and biology from artsci college. So will I have the flexibility of doing Newhouse as well as premed program?

Would there also be room for me complete a third minor or major?

Depends on the credits you have from high school, I think.
But then again, those are two programs that are going to give you a lot of work, do you really want to pile more on top of it? Also, what kind of combination are you considering?
One of my friends at school wants to go into clinical psychiatry and work at a school, but she's trying to load up on all these majors and minors that don't make sense (like a major in mag journalism so she can write in the off season). You can't fault her for wanting to be well rounded, but there's something to be said for focus.
Also, Newhouse programs, or at least the mag program, are set up assuming you want to become an editor, not just dabble in the journalism industry. It's a lot of work to take on if you're just looking for a hobby.

I'm not hounding you here, just trying to figure out what job requires a degree in journalism, biology, and some third topic.
Hmm...medical journal...published in...Spanish? Medical journal for history enthusiasts? Historical magazine for medical enthusiasts?

the third major just seemed intresting after I read about a few others who were planning on doing the same thing, but most likely im just gonna be doing magazine journo and bio.

Oh and I'm looking at medical journalism as a career.

My daughter is a junior in Newhouse. She is double-majoring in public relations and public policy (Maxwell); she tells me that a lot of kids complete this double major. Although she had taken some public policy classes from the beginning, she just declared the double major this fall, and will be able to finish in four years no problem; however, she had at least a full semester of AP credits before she began.
