My D was admitted to all 3 programs above and she is having a hard time deciding btwn them. She is interested in marketing maybe advertising or PR or HR. I know so many things to consider… all exploratory at this point.
Newhouse/ Whitman SU gave her $25k - she is OOS but it is a double major and tons of work. She is thinking that she could drop Newhouse if too much and graduate from Whitman
Kelley School of Biz IU she got $11k (OOS)and she is inHutton Honors. She is not crazy about the school -it didn’t pass the smile test when she visited - not a lot of smiles back from current students. Great biz school and w great internships and jobs oppty.
OSU - in state $2500 scholarship , honors program in the Fisher school of Biz , she will revisit since she is coming from a school HS and the size of OSU is huge.
We want to eliminate SU since it is a lot of work and if she drops out of the dual program Kelly or OSU are better Biz schools than WhItman. But she wants to visit. Anyone with kids in SU dual program that could help us decide if we drive 9 hours or not? How hard is the program and how douable is it?
Syracuse is a private school; there is no in-state/OOS costs. Everyone pays the same price. at over $65k/year, will $$ be an issue? As you already know the school does not meet100% demonstrated need. If you know it is going to be a stretch, do not make a 9 hour trip for a school that may not be a financially feasible option for your family.
Again, IU is ~ 45k/year OOS. will this be a financially feasible option for your family. You state that she did not seem have a positive vibe about the school.
While OSU while be big, wouldn’t the honors college make it smaller?
have a serious talk about $$ if it is an issue. Have her attend the admitted student days and then make a choice.
My son decided IU/Kelley/honors (same scholarship too) was NOT worth the extra cost above our in state flagship (full disclosure, our in state flagship, UMD, was his first choice before applying), IF he got direct admit into bus school.
I think OSU would work out just as well.
I don’t know that Syracuse is worth the Money, especially if loans need to be involved, but that would be a pretty good DOUBLE major.
OSU runs a freshman retention rate of 92-94%. That is incredibly good for a large state school. They work very hard from day one to keep freshman engaged and growing. If it was my state school, I don’t think I would look too far.
I would suggest going to the Colleges and Universities thread and posting your question about Syracuse on the page for Syracuse, you may get more specific info about the demand of that particular double major. My D is a freshman at Syracuse but in a different program. I can say that the social life is perhaps as demanding as the academics (though I think that may be true at IU and OSU as well!) so that may be a consideration as well, for better or worse.
Thank you all! And when we thought the decision btwn the 3 is all we have to do…well she got into Lindner Honors Plus at University of Cincinnati. Full scholarship for 5 years with 4/6 internships guaranteed. While UC doesn’t have the prestige of the other schools this particular program is super good. Money is not an issue but having internships and only 25 kids in the program , being treated as super stars is sounds very appealing to her. I am a little snob that would rather have her to Kelley but I don’t want to push.
Lindner Honors Plus is great indeed - superstar kids, lots of opportunities, and 100% placement rate if she’s not aiming for grad school.
But do look into what classes would be taken outside of the honors college.
Does she like the urban feel? Has she attended admitted student days?
All are good choices.
Whitman/Newhouse is excellent and impressive, great connections. Doing both is doable (obviously you can’t add another major but the program is relatively flexible for the majority who come in with AP/DE credit) and very marketable. Especially good if she’s aiming for a job in Boston/NYC.
Fisher is the traditional college experience , football, residential campus, students from all over the state, good honors college + a strong business school (strength varies depending on major, look into it).
Kelley is very stressful for non direct admits with a lot if weed out classes but being in the honors college she’ll skip them. Especially strong for finance so it’ll depend on her priorities but it sounds like the least good fit so with other excellent choices she may focus on the others.
Both Fisher and Kelley are good for Midwestern careers although they’ve got good connections on the Northern East Coast too.
