Newhouse

I just finished a visit and interview at Syracuse and I'm pretty sure that I did pretty well. We talked about Study Abroad, my classes, Politics (not really but he brought it up after I mentioned talking Government this year. I said that I had recently gotten interested in the Election and had been watching some of the debates and I saw the conventions), my interests (theatre but not as an academic interest, fashion design, writing, poetry, art, graphic design, literature, etc.), the Newhouse School itself and why I am interested in the school.

I know that the school is competitive and I am willing to go through Arts and Sciences and then eventually transfer into the school.

Stats:

ACT: 26 (He said it was above the average for admission)
GPA: 3.5 (He said it was fine)
Classes: All Honors, except for electives (He said my classes were good)

Other Qualifications:

Awards:
- Second Place in Flash Design (Summer Graphics Camp at Nationally Known School. I don't want to say because of privacy issues)
- Second Place in All Divisions (Same Camp)

Honors:
- My art was featured on the cover of our Literary Magazine.
- I was published in the Literary Magazine
- Two years in a row I was published in another school Literary Magazine
- Two years on the Yearbook Staff

- I am now Co-Editor of our school yearbook (which i have to say is amazing and is going to be amazing this year as well as last year).
- National French Honor Society
- National Beta Club
- National Art Honor Society
- National Junior Art Honor Society

Leadership:
- Yearbook: Co-Editor
- French Club: Vice President (Two Years in a Row)

- Summer Acting Camp (I lead my team in Marketing, Fundraising and Planning projects)

I know that I might not get into Newhouse my first year but I hope that I will get in eventually. I am wondering if I have a good chance with all of my qualifications.

I am hoping to go into Graphic Arts but I may change once I'm there (I'm applying to the Newhouse School. That's all I know, though. Oh and Arts and Sciences, of course.)

that's exactly what I want to do at newhouse!

Although your ECs are very good, you need to bring up your ACT score to get into Newhouse. I would advise you to take the ACT again, if it is not too late.

Hi there, Elbie09~
Just wondering if your interviewer said that your ACT score was above average for Newhouse or CAS?

The interviewer said for CAS I think, in general. He wasn't specific.

My scores are kind of low, I know. I took it more than once and got the same score. Hopefully, if I don't get in, I can transfer while I'm there. The interviewer said it was possible.

My daughter got into Newhouse for graphic arts w/SAT's of 1230/1600 and an ACT of 27. Her high school average was 93.68 unweighted w/all academic honors classes, and only 2 AP classes. She had 3 years of design classes, 2 years were independent study, and also was in charge of the school newsletter/publication, which showed she had interest in this area for a while. While she was a really good student, she was not one to do well on those standardized tests...

That is actually really helpful and reassuring that I do have a chance. Thanks for the information! =)

Yes, You do have a chance! Sometimes you will see people who's stats look way better not getting in, and people w/stats that are not that strong getting in. I think interest in your major helps, and also your interview surely helped! My daughter did not interview, but she had an interview with the Fine Arts department! Once she learned that it was an intensely art only program she had a tour w/a photo major as her guide. He asked her what she wanted to do, and when she explained she wanted to do layout and design for a magazine he guided her to Newhouse. We ended up talking to the secretary who talked to her for over an hour!! We think she might have had something to do w/getting her in. The secretary brought her in to meet the president and really guided her through learning about Newhouse as we had never heard of it before. While the secretary was practically interviewing my daughter many other potential students came for info and she was horribly rude to all of them! For some reason she really liked my daughter. It was really pretty odd. But I do think you have a chance, and with your current experience you will probably be bored in the early level classes. I know my daughter is sort of laughing at parts of it. Some of the students have never seen photoshop, illustrator, or in-design before, so at this point there has not been any new learning, just a different perspective on how to look at things.

Best of luck to you!

Thank you so much for the encouragement! I really appreciate it. If I get in, I'm pretty sure that is where I am going to go. =D

I am not sure if this was mentioned already because I'm too lazy to read the responses but Newhouse definotely is numbers oriented but what counts most of all is your passion for journalism/communication. They want to see how you began your interest in communication etc.

Thank you!

I was also recently inducted into the National Honor Society. I have not sent in my application yet, so I can put that on there. =) Hopefully, next semester, I might be inducted into Quill and Scroll. However, it'll be too late to put it on my application.
