News and Updates from W&M Admission

For the past year, W&M Admission has been an enthusiastic contributor to the William & Mary forum on College Confidential. We have put forward accurate and thoughtful information so as to meet our prospective students and families where they are and to help students navigate the admission and application process.

Now that we have a full year of great information posted throughout this forum, we will be taking a step back. We will still be present to answer any admission-specific questions, any private messages CC’ers want to send us and post important campus and admission updates. Should there be any general questions about W&M we will leave those to other CC posters unless the question is one others cannot answer. We will no longer respond to Chance Me threads. William & Mary’s holistic process requires a complete application and admission committee review to provide an applicant with their chances. Those looking for our take on such threads should check out our Admit It! Blog on the topic (W&M Blogs Chance Me). We will leave those threads to other respondents. We also recommend posting such threads on the Chance Me forum on CC.

Until we all chat again…

Happy November everyone!

So some of you have breathed that first sigh of relief that comes with submitting an application. But what happens next?

Well for those of you who applied early decision or for spring transfer admission we are in the middle of processing your applications. We will send you an initial email when we receive your Common App and a second email when we process all of the required materials and complete your application (freshman applicants: your parents will also get both emails). If we are missing any item, we will notify you via email and provide instructions as to how to submit the missing item.

Spring Transfers: remember to submit mid-term grades by Nov. 22.

Then, it’s on to reading (we’re so excited to be in reading season – check out our November 4th Tweet: [Twitter](http://twitter.com/#!/WM_Admission)).

Notifications will come via email in early December (early decision applicants) and mid-December (spring transfer applicants).

Good luck to everyone!

Well the Early Decision Committee process has commenced. We are completing reads on all files and beginning to select the Class of 2016. We are enjoying reading/learning about your talents and accomplishments, your personalities and pitfalls, your successes and challenges. Stay tuned to our Admit It! Blog for more from inside our Committe discussions (http://blogs.wm.edu/author/admiss</a>)

Good news! Does December 1st look like a probable notification date? Well aware it is difficult to tell, but wondering if ballpark date is closer to the 1st than the 8th?

Happy Reading :)

All we know at this point is that we’re aiming for the first week of December. We just try to avoid speculating so as not to set forth expectations that may not end up being accurate.

In order to release decisions we need to have every complete file reviewed, every letter printed and ready to mail (we mail letters to admits the same day we email decisions to all applicants), etc and there’s no way to set a date as to when that will be complete more than a day or so in advance. When decisions are ready to be released we will be sure to make that info available on our website, on our social media, on our blog and on this site.

We’ve completed all but a very small percentage of our early decision applications. We ask all ED applicants to check their email (the email they used on the Common App). We will have emailed you letting you know that either your application is complete or that we are missing items. If you are missing items we will let you know how to submit those items. There is no penalty assessed but we do need you to submit any missing items ASAP.

W&M_Admin
Is the email that you are referring to in regard to “complete” application the 2nd email that would have gone to both the applicant and the parent email or is this a new round of emails with a new status?

We send an initial email to all freshman applicants and their parents when we receive their application. If we process all required materials, we send a second email to all freshman applicants and their parents letting them know the application is complete. If any required component is missing we instead send an email, to the applicant only, letting them know what’s missing and how to send that missing component to us.

At this point we’ve completed all but a small group of early decision applications so ED applicants should check their email to see if they’ve received the complete email from us or if they’ve received an email saying something is missing.

Hope this clarifies everything.

Is the small group have you not completed yet distinctive or is it a small percentage of the entire pool? I received the initial email but I haven’t received the completion email.

We were speaking of a small percentage of the early decision pool that we haven’t completed. Those apps currently have priority for processing over regular decision apps. If you’ve applied ED and neither you nor your parents have received a complete email you should call our office tomorrow (757-221-4223) to see what your file might be missing. If you applied for regular decision and haven’t received a second email do not worry. Just give us some time as those applications aren’t a priority just yet.

Just an FYI…the College and the Office of Undergraduate Admission are closed until Monday, November 28. Emails and phone calls will likely not be returned until the College reopens on Monday. We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday.

We are in the process of releasing Early Decision notifications via email. The process is complicated and takes some time so there’s no specific time we can point to as to when you will receive your individual decision (it takes time for each individual email to load, be sent and then received by your email server) but all decisions will be available in the coming hours.

Please check all spam and junk folders if an email does not appear in your in-box.

Decisions are emailed to the email address you provided in your Common Application. Only the applicant is emailed. Parents are not.

The sender will vary depending on your email client but “William & Mary” will be part of the sender information and the subject will be either “William & Mary Admission Decision” or “Good Things” (for those of you who receive the latter, don’t overanalyze it…it means what you think it means!).

If you do not receive an email, you can contact our office between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. We will resend your decision via a different email tool that evening and mail a hard copy of your decision to you.

For more on our process and the decisions made, check out our Admit It! Blog on the subject ([W&M Blogs Decisions, Decisions — Early Decision 2011 Edition](http://blogs.wm.edu/2011/11/30/decisions-decisions-early-decision-2011-edition/))

As a very proud Mom to a new Tribe member, I want to thank you so very much for answering so many questions as we went through this process. I have to say that your guidance was an enormous help and you so often helped ease the stress through your thoughtful answers.

I am so excited for my daughter - she has not stopped singing and dancing around the house…and it’s been several hours :)

My D was accepted as well and its a weight off her shoulders. I know she’ll sleep well tonight for sure. Again Congrats to you and your D :-)

Hello, I applied as a transfer student for spring term, and everyone is receiving their decisions. Is my decision coming or should I be preparing an application for Fall Term 2012?..

helpmeeeee, we only released freshman early decision notifications. Those who applied for spring transfer will not receive their decision emails until next week (no exact date yet determined).

any updates on when transfer decisions will be released?

Admission decisions for spring transfer applicants will be emailed on December 5. A specific time cannot be provided as it takes several hours for individual emails to be uploaded, sent and then received by your email server. All decisions are emailed to the email address provided in your Common Application.

More information about how decisions are released, how they were reached and what to do if you did not receive an email can be found on our Admit It! Blog ([W&M Blogs Decisions, Decisions — Spring Transfer Applicants](http://blogs.wm.edu/2011/12/05/decisions-decisions-spring-transfer-applicants/)).

Good luck to everyone!

The College of William & Mary and the Office of Undergraduate Admission will be closed for the winter break beginning Friday, December 23. We will reopen on Tuesday, January 3. During the closure we will be responding to questions posted on CC or any private messages daily and we will be monitoring our admission@wm.edu email address for any urgent inquiries.

Good luck to everyone finishing up their applications and Happy Holidays ([William & Mary](http://www.wm.edu/holiday/?svr=web))!

Awesome holiday video! Same to you, W&M Admission! :)
