Words of Wisdom from W&M Admission: News & Updates for the '13-'14 Application Cycle

Hard to believe that another application cycle is officially upon us. To the high school class of 2014 and those looking to apply to transfer in the coming academic year, we are here for you and with you. We will go through this process together. This thread provides a forum for you to get updates on our process and for you to ask any question of W&M admission officers.

First update for the 2013-2014 cycle: The Common Application went live yesterday. As it's a brand new version, please be patient as some remaining bugs are worked out. You should however be able to log on, create an account and begin your application. The W&M Member Questions (formerly known as the Supplement) will be available soon.

Our fall semester tours and visit schedule (which includes Fall Focus Days Tribe Shadow days) is live (William & Mary - Visit Campus). Our fall interview schedule will be available as of September 1.

The W&M Member Questions (questions that W&M has decided to ask applicants in addition to the information requested by the Common App plus our Optional Additional Submission) is now live through the Common Application. As long as you add W&M to your college list, the Common App will prompt you to complete our Member Questions and then submit them just as it will prompt you to submit the Common App itself.

Remember, our first deadline (Early Decision) is not until November 1. Our Regular Decision deadline is January 1. You will neither increase your chances of being admitted nor hear from us earlier based on your submission date. So submit when ready, but feel free to take your time in finishing your application.

During the fall semester, we offer a limited number of on-campus interview appointments for high school seniors as an optional component to the application. That registration is now available ([William & Mary - On-Campus Interviews](http://www.wm.edu/admission/interview)). Interviews run weekday afternoons (2:00pm, 3:00pm and 4:00pm) September 9 - November 16 (excluding Oct. 14-15 which is W&M’s Fall Break) and select Saturday mornings in conjunctions with our Fall Focus events. Appointments fill quickly so register today!

Hi I am an international student who has been in the U.S for the entire high school education, I got a composite score of 33 on ACT, English-32,Math-33, Reading-34(I know, as a foreigner :D) what I am wondering is that since I am applying for ED( CWM is my dream school), Do i need to submit a TOEFL score because there is no time for me to take it by the ED deadline? Thanks!! Have a good day :)

@991592880, freshman international applicants are not required to take the TOEFL. It is highly recommended but not required. So you can apply ED without it.

In light of some of the challenges surrounding submission of CA4, we have extended our Early Decision and Spring Transfer application deadlines to Friday, November 8. We will accept ED and Spring Transfer applications submitted on or before that date. For more info, check out our latest Admit It! Blog ([W&M Blogs » Early Decision and Spring Transfer Application Deadlines Extended to Nov. 8](http://blogs.wm.edu/2013/10/23/early-decision-and-spring-transfer-application-deadlines-extended-to-november-8/))

Results for those who applied Early Decision are being emailed during the evening of Friday, December 6. Details about how to receive your decision and about each of the decisions we made is available on our Admit It! Blog (blogs.wm.edu/author/admiss). We greatly appreciate everyone’s patience as we worked our way through the first admission process of the 2013-2014 cycle. Best of luck to all and to those admitted, welcome to the Tribe!

My daughter was deferred as an ED applicant. What percent of deferred ED applicants get accepted in the regular pool, vs overall percent acceptance in the regular decision pool? thanks.

@dadinvirginia, unfortunately, it’s a fairly small, select cohort of deferred students who are eventually admitted. As the applicant pool grows, the competitiveness of the pool only continues to increase. We do encourage deferred students to eagerly pursue other options while they await their spring decision from W&M.

Decisions for those who applied for spring transfer admission were released this evening. For more on that process and the decisions we reached, check out our latest Admit It! Blog (blogs.wm.edu/author/admiss)

Does the subject line “William & Mary Admission Decision” ultimately mean a guaranteed rejection, or is it randomly used to send the email along with “Good News”?

How important is SAT to william & mary ? What SAT score is considered Ok for william & mary? What if the student have a good toefl score, but a low sat score ? Should she still apply for william & mary?

@Chris00656, the William & Mary Admission Decision subject line can mean a variety of things depending on what kind of application the student submitted (ED, Regular Decision, Spring Transfer, Fall Transfer, etc.). Good News is hopefully fairly evident.

@Mirabeljiang, SAT scores are one part of our process along with grades, courses, extracurricular activities, an essay or essays, recommendations, etc. The middle 50% range for our students is 1260-1470 (Critical Reading + Math). Any interested student should apply to W&M since there are no minimum criteria students should meet. They should just understand that as a selective school, we unfortunately have to turn away more qualified students than we can admit.

My daughter applied to W&M regular decision in November. When I read the printout of her application, i found that she forgot to include the AP scholar award in the application. Should she email your office about this? Is this information one important criterion in the admission process? Thanks

Dear W&M: Can you tell me if mock trial is an active organization on campus? The links on the student organization page are old and cold and I could not find anything current on Facebook, etc. I also sent an email yesterday to the general mock trial email address but no response yet. My daughter, an RD applicant, is a mock trial enthusiast who wants to participate at the collegiate level. If the club is defunct, that could affect her decision if she is fortunate enough to be accepted.

@CSPSU, if your daughter wishes to update her application she’s welcome to send an email to our office and we’ll include it.

@DGDzDad, as far as we know the Mock Trial team is still active on campus. The email address for student clubs is answered by students who are currently on winter break and may not be checking those email addresses. You’re welcome to follow up with the Office of Student Leadership Development and they should be able to assist.

I’m not really sure whether or not i should apply. I’m worried that my GPA is holding me back from being accepted RD. It’s 3.48 and weighted is 4.1, also my ACT is a 31 and my EC’s are way too long to be listed. I think i wrote a pretty artistic essay that will truly encapsulate the reader so i’m not too worried about that. Please send me your insights on my application! thanks!

@student2018, if you’re interested in W&M, why not apply? Every student is considered thoroughly (we don’t have any formulas or cut-offs that automatically knock anyone out of contention) so every student stands a chance. If you’re already doing the Common App for other schools, you haven’t really lost any time or energy. As long as you go in with reasonable expectations (knowing that selective schools like W&M have to turn away more great students than we can admit but understanding that our process allows every student a chance), there’s no harm right?

Just a friendly reminder that today, January 1, is the RD application deadline. The technical deadline is midnight tonight EST. You should make every effort to submit your materials by that time. However, know that we are not watching the clock. We will gladly accept applications (and accompanying materials) that arrive shortly after the technical deadline.

I tried to submit my writing supplement at 8:30 west coast time, and common app would not let me log in! I have been trying for two hours, it seems like the site is completely down. Please help!! I was ready to submit it by the deadline!
