News and Updates from W&M Admission

my D was wait listed. She’s so sad - was her first choice. Hoping she gets your spot, Tonk907

William and Mary,

If you had been selected as a Monroe Scholar, would that information have been included in the acceptance email?

So happy to join the Tribe! What a wonderful way to start the morning!

^^^SK- Monroe announcements were sent out a couple of weeks ago.

I think the real problem with W&M and UVA is that unlike most public state universities they accept 35% out-of-staters and only 65% from in-state. Most public state universities only accept 20-25% of out-of-staters. There is no argument for the proposition that there are not enough qualified Virginians for the spots when my friends have been accepted at Ivy schools like Brown, Berkeley (like me), and Dartmouth and were rejected by UVA and W&M. You would also think that our whacky, allegedly pro-taxpayer republican legislature and governor would be on top of this, but they are not.

By the way, I am pretty happy about moving to California and attending Berkeley, just sayin!

TRIBE 2016!!! Didn’t get my email until 11:00 PM but so worth the wait!

I didn’t get in. My GPA is solid, my standardized test scores exceed the high end of the given “average” for W&M, I participate in multiple clubs including leader positions, my teacher recommendations and essay were fine (subjective statement), and I had written recommendations from alumni in my family.

I suppose that I’m more puzzled than upset. shrug

Alas, there’s no use in being bitter about it. Congratulations to everyone who was accepted, and I hope you all enjoy the experience~

accepteddd!!! at first i was confused as to what the e-mail was haha. so happy!

@Kyrooo- I am in the same position you are in. I don’t know what I did wrong and I also have multiple alumni in my family, so needless to say I’m disappointed. I kind of feel like I wasted my time, but oh well, UVa '16 :)

alright I think I’ll give up now … still no email. i called and said that a 5 PM they would resend those emails that didn’t go through last night. Guess I’ll depend on whether or not I receive a letter in the mail tomorrow – only fate will tell!

Congrats on getting into Berkeley! Over the last few years, there have been several students at my son’s in-state high school admitted to Berkeley and UCLA, but denied or wait listed at UVA and W&M. I think given the budget troubles in CA, even the best publics like to get OOS paying $50K.

I’m an international and still haven’t received the email.
My friend received it yesterday and she’s accepted.
I sent an email to the admission office.
They replied that my application is complete now and ready for review.
But isn’t the decision already made?
This is just so confusing.

@takita, we know there is a lot of debate regarding the IS/OOS ratio at some of Virginia’s public universities. It’s never the case that we don’t value our IS students, it’s that there is also a lot of merit and value in our OOS students (much in the same way Berkeley is attracted to you as an OOS student). And we do not not have quotas or biases towards particular parts of the state. We do our best, based on the applicant pool we receive, to have all parts of the Commonweatlh represented. We of course get fewers applications from say Southwest VA than we do NOVA and more students choose to enroll from NOVA than other parts (which also makes sense given it’s the most populated region) but we value what students from all parts of the state bring to campus and do not favor one region over the other.

@rck2012 and @kyroo, we understand your disappointment. It’s not that you did anything wrong or came up short in some area. It’s simply that all of the students applying to W&M, like you, have great GPAs and SATs and are involved in lots of great ECs.

@stealthyscholar, we did re-send emails last night to those who requested it. They were sent before 8:00pm.

@nikkyo, when did you contact our office? It’s possible that your application just completed in which case we still need to make a decision which will be emailed to you once it’s ready.

@DougBetsy, we tend to enjoy students who take risks with their writing and no doubt we appreciated the personality and wit shown in your D’s Supplement.

@NYLove, we generally waitlist about 22-25% of our applicants. Not all of those students elect to remain on the waitlist however.

Thank you for the reply.
I contacted the office yesterday.
So does that mean there are still some applications under review?

I read on this thread that Monroe Scholars will receive Joint Degree decisions in the mail this week, but does that also apply to regular applicants?

@W&M Admissions – yeah even after requesting to resend the email i never got it. Since it’s probably futile to request another email, I decided just to wait and see if I receive an acceptance letter in the mail. Im from NJ, so i figured i’d give it until friday. If nothing, I’ll just assume rejection. No worries, I guess.

@nikkyo, the only applications still under review are those that have completed in the last few days.

@BRSpartan12, emails about the joint degree programme were emailed tonight. Those admitted to it will also receive a mailed letter.

@stealthyscholar, our best guess is that your email server is simply blocking our emails period, no matter what method we use to send it. Either that or it’s possible the email you provided in your application had a typo or something in it. In either case, we mailed a hard copy of your decision when we resent your email so you will get a decision. If for any reason you don’t get that let us know. Don’t assume no decision means a bad decision.

How many people got into the Joint Degree Programme with St. Andrews for economics? I just got accepted (yay!) and I was curious about the statistics

@sunshine, congrats! Sorry but we don’t have the exact numbers on that. Generally our admit rate for the joint degree programme is about the same as for W&M. Our goal is to enroll five students in each of the programme majors (so 5 in Econ, 5 in English, 5 in History and 5 in IR). St Andrews’ goal is to do the same.

The Financial Aid Office has begun sending out aid packages. Notification comes via email to the student’s application email address. In that email are instructions for how to access your aid package online. Before accessing your award package you’ll need to activate your W&M account (instructions for doing so are found in the “Your Account” section of the admitted student website).

We are getting numerous calls asking if we can match awards (either merit or need-based) offered by other institutions. Unfortunately, we do not have funds set aside to do so. All merit and need-based monies that we can award we do. Of course any outside scholarships a student has earned can be used at W&M and our Financial Aid Office can certainly discuss additional options (various types of loans, etc.).

Can you tell me if all the financial aid awards have been sent out? We still have not received anything and we sent in our verification information in Feb. I figured I’d give it till the end of the day before I called. Thank you.
