I'd go with upper because its actually on BC so you never worry about taking a bus.

ya bus hahah yaaaa

On upper there is a chance of being put in a forced triple if there is a shortage on space. Usually it is just for a short time and they decrease the $$ from your room bill. Nevertheless although the Newton campus is nice sometimes there are long COLD waits in the winter waiting for the shuttle to bring you to main. I'd go upper campus.

For social reasons, I'd say Newton for any incoming freshman since most freshmen will be housed there. Upper is primarily upperclassmen and as joesmom said, you might be forced a triple.

are the newton campuses newer, or are they all kind of old?

Yea, was Newton Campus constructed more recently?!!

I have only seen Upper, from what i have seen i can tell you that the campus is amazing. Some of the brand new dorms are gorgeous, but other older dorms are not. The academic buildings on the outside are old and gothic, and on the inside very very new and very nice. Especially the Carrol School of Management. The freshman dorms were niceley in between. I have only seen a picture of newton, but it looks very nice.

I requested Upper this year, and when i got put on Newton, I'll admit I was disappointed at first. But now all I can say to you guys is: Newton all the way!
There is a drastic shortage of housing this year (two freshman dorms on upper were converted to sophomore housing), so any freshman on upper has a very very good chance of being stuck in a forced triple. There is no chance of being stuck in a forced triple on Newton.
Sure upper is closer to campus, but believe me the bus isn't as bad as everyone is saying it is. You get to make friends with everyone who you ride to class with; every bus ride is a nice little bonding experience. Plus, you get the feeling of "going home" after class. Newton is very tight-knit and a great place to live. The dorms here are very recently refurbished and bigger than the rooms on upper. The bathrooms are cleaner. And Stewart, or Stewie, (the dining hall) is nicer than McElroy, where most kids on Upper eat. The common rooms have pool tables, big screen TVs, workout equipment, and wireless internet connections. There are also study lounges in each building that are excellent for quiet studying complete with wireless connection as well. There are lots of grassy areas to play ultimate, or whiffle ball, or just sit and read a book in the sun, too! Upper is mostly pavement, and its noisy too. Most people are happy where ever they end up, even though we all know Newton kids are happier. :)

This makes for an extremely tough decision! I really don't know which one to sign up for now ...

How do these campuses fair in relation to the bitter cold winter?!

=)

How are the bathrooms, is there a shortage in any dorm? Are they really cold in the morning? (sorry if that seems a dumb question .. where i am from they sometimes dont heat the bathrooms so its freezing in winter, but since you guys get snow i am thinking they would'nt risk not heating them)

Also can people smoke inside?

I highly doubt people can smoke inside.

When its cold you simply put on a winter jacket. Waiting at the bus stop at Newton will be just as cold as walking down four flights of stairs from Upper. Hats and Mittens are advised.
As for the bathrooms, I know on Newton (Cushing Dorm specifically) there is never a shortage. We have six toilet stalls and five shower stalls and there's never a wait. The bathrooms are heated (the only time they get cold is if someone opens a window). :)
oh yea, and there's no smoking inside. the fire alarms are really sensitive, and Reslife has strict policies (complete with fines) about anything with a flame.

Ok great, thanks for the info!

im going to bc next year and, for me, the choice has to do with how comfortable i am with the amount of ppl....since newton only has 800 ppl you prob get more of a small college atmosphere within the larger university...and coming from a tiny high school that would be a great transition for me--at least as a freshman

until what times does the bus make trips to newton?

The bus runs until 2:00AM

Can anyone tell me more about the bus situation on Newton? I heard from some people that the buses are packed and you have to wait for the next bus to make its round. Does this happen? Especially in winter, where you gotta wait outside when its freezing/snowing. Also, if you live on Newton, do you feel outcasted from the main campus? Any helpful advice. Thanks

Sorry... but yet another question .... I was wondering how noisey dorms are. Are you able to sleep in in the mornings if you wish or are they quite loud?

ok! let's see what i can do for you two!

As for the buses: Yes, its true, sometimes the buses are so packed that you'll have to wait for the next one. However this only occurs around certain times of the day. Usually around two-thirty on weekdays (when most people get out of class for the day), midnight on weekends, and after all sporting events you may have to wait for another bus. BUT! The Newton buses will run more frequently at these times (they have LOTS shuttle buses for the football games) so you won't be stuck out in the cold for more than seven/eight minutes. (If there is a freak blizzard, it may be more like twenty minutes..)

The outcasting: No, Newtonites are not outcasted. Its even embraced! Sure it may take a little longer to get to the football games, but it's really not as bad as some people make it out to be. Besides! Who else gets to spend freshmen year abroad?

As for the dorms: I live on Newton in Cushing dorm, which is the smallest of them all, so hopefully more people will give you feedback. The dorms have enforced quiet hours: 10PM (i think..) til 8AM on weeknights and 12AM-10AM on weekends. I've never been disturbed in the morning when I sleep in, probably because the rest of the floor is sleeping too. I guess the only disturbance would be the opening and closing of doors...

Hopefully that helped.. :)
