Nicest dorms and closest to econ?

hey i've been accepted as an economics major.

and i've got a few questions about housing.

first, once the housing apps are ready do we get to choose what dorm we want to be in?

two, if so what are the nicest dorms,

and third, what dorm's closest to, well, econ classes?

very excited to be going to NU, basically has been my dream school :)

well any input's appreciated thanks!

same major same questions

Alot of dorm info is available on the NU site, otherwise the class of '11 facebook group has been really helpful.

i'm in the same boat and have the same questions. does anyone at least know what halls the econ classes mostly take place in?

p.s.: for now, i'm debating between willard, allison, and bobb

You do get to choose your housing-you select the top 5 and then they somehow choose your roomate and where you live.

nicest dorms are slivka and kemper (just based on how much it costs to live there) though the only one open to freshmen is slivka. It's the "science and engineering" RC so you may not necessarily want to stay there if you're econ.

in terms of how close it is to econ classes, from what i see most classes (ie intro and some intermediates) are in tech in north campus. Closest dorms to that are Sargent, Bobb, McCulloch, Slivka, ACCI, and Kemper. Just a bit more north are the freshmen quads (ie everyone's a freshmen)

I'm an econ major and quite honestly, you're asking a relatively unfair question. Where classes are held changes every quarter. Most of the very large lecture classes (Intro to Macro and Intro to Macro) take place in Tech, so in that sense it's good to be on North Campus (Slivka, Elder, Bobb-McColloch). But almost all Weinberg classes (Spanish classes, discussion sections for econ, poli sci classes, history, sociology, philosophy etc.) are on South Campus (Allison, 1835 Hinman, Willard). North campus is by the fraternity quad, so if you plan on partying, factoring that in. But, south campus borders Evanston, which is a HUGE advantage. CVS, Starbucks, Chipotle, and more restaurants than you can imagine are a block away for those on South.
As for dorm differences, Allison has the biggest rooms and most people. That's widely considered the best dorm, and there are often hall parties in people's rooms. Slivka is a place for engineers to go, so there is NO social scene at all. 1835 Hinman is a nice place, has the best dining hall (with Allison running a strong 2nd), and is on South, but also is 2 blocks away from any other dorms, so its kinda secluded. Willard is also on South, but since it's a res college it's a bit clique-y. Granted if you're in then its great and you get to do all of these "exclusive" Willard things. But still, it's kind of limiting. Elder is the freshman only dorm, so thats good in its own way. And Bobb-McCulloch is the party dorm. It's by the frats but there is also a huge social scene within the dorm. Some engineers don't do their research and choose Bobb to be by Tech, but most of the people (especially the upperclassmen) know what's up and go to party.

How's ACCI?

as a correlary to cerbralassassin, slivka actually does have a social scene, but as it turns out, it's rather cliquey. You will hang out in slivka with people in slivka. freshmen this year are really social, which is cool.

so if you choose bobb, its going to be very noisy and will be hard to study/do work? I want a dorm in a social building, but also want the people in the building to realize that we need time for studying.

Last year intro econ classes were mostly held in Kellogg -- it really varies. Don't choose your dorm based on your major unless you're music, journalism or engineering. Every other major has classes scattered around campus and you'd do better to choose a dorm based on personal preferences.

AICC is a pretty good res college =) at least i'm gonna make it my first choice and i'm also an econ major.
it's also close to a lot of econ classes =) north part of campus

It's not the most social but it's supposed to be pretty good. I still think the big social dorms like Allison, Willard, Elder and Bobb are the best ones.

What's the nicest dorm availible for an engineering student?
When I stayed overnight at NU, I stayed in Elders Hall and I didn't like that dorm at all because the rooms were really small for me and I didn't like the communal showers. Do any dorms at NU have personal bathrooms? I am also looking for a dorm that is fairly social.

The closest you will get to personal bathrooms is a suite setup. There are like 5 rooms in Willard with private bathrooms but sophomores take most of them and the odds aren't in your favor to get one of the remaining ones. It's college, sharing bathrooms is kind of unavoidable.

The nicest (room/cleanwise) dorm is the Engineering res college, Slivka. It's also known for being rather antisocial/science-y/no partying/etc.

I don't really mind sharing bathroom b/c I go to a boarding school. I just prefer a personal bathroom. I guess I can settle for communal bathrooms if I have no other choice as a freshman. I doubt I would want to be in Slivka because I'm a pretty social person and I don't want to be bored out of my mind over there. Does anyone know of a nice dorm (doesn't have to be the nicest) with good sized rooms and a relatively social atmosphere in North Campus?
Thanks

The 4 best dorms on North are probably:

Bobb- small rooms but by far the most social/party
Elder- about the same as Bobb except only freshmen
Sargent- don't know much about it, probably less social than the other 2
CCI- commerce residential college, nicest facilities but probably least social?

I don't know anyone up north outside of bobb and elder so I'm not much help here...

Is McCulloch the same as Bobb or are they different dorms?

bobb mculloch are connected, but people normally name bobb specifically as the party dorm. not sure why

Because McCulloch is longer. they're literally the same dorm, just different sides of the same dorm.

When you apply for housing are they separate or the same? Sorry but I'm confused on the distinction between the two.
