i was considering iserp too, but it only takes two kids a year. plus, you have no control over what you'll be doing and what field. still looks interesting, though. all you have to send in is a resume and a letter of interest. kind of vague.

How difficult is it to get into the GS of the arts? Has anyone gone?

it's extremely competitive. my friend went two years ago (she's at risd now) and they selected 18 kids for the visual arts program, if that's what you're referring to. there's about 2-3 kids from every high school in nj who applies, so you can do the math to figure out the percentage isn't very high.

did everyone's schools already get the info? i don't think mine did yet..

Some people said they didn't. I know the applications aren't in yet. We'll have to wait a little for those which is bad because the deadline for submission is on december 15th this year.

not to be obnoxious, but friends and I have been wondering.... how prestigious is the nj gov school? are the programs really very good, or just enjoyable? i know that most kids who have gone have enjoyed it, but have you found that many people were impressed by it? i'm most seriously considering international relations and the arts programs.

nj gov school is pretty competitive, very competitive depending on which school you're applying to. the school of the arts is extremely competitive, as they break it down into subcategories and you apply to one (film, writing, visual arts, dance, etc) and there are approx 12 kids per school, 18 in visual arts.

i heard the environmental one was easy to get into, but if you're just into prestige, note that the easier it is to get into a certain school, the less prestige it holds.

int'l relations is also pretty competitive, i heard. i think that's the one where you go to quebec? google nj governor's school and look at their website.

Hey guys! I'm breaking my promise to myself that I wouldn't go on CC at all this week just to tell you that the apps are going to be at our schools this week! They are already online at some site..I have no clue which but I already got a "practice" copy for the engineering school.

Those bastards, everyone that's in visual arts, including me, is screwed. Because of the late notice, I have only 2 weeks to make my portfolio. cries But! I'm about half way done. =) ?? Anyone else trying out for visual arts? Oh by the way, do you think it's ok if half my stuff is digital art, meaning instead of painting with acrylics, I used photoshop? Lol, I hope the judges aren't biased against digital. I know a lot of people think that the computer does all the work for you..sigh I actually think I have a good chance of getting in...

where did you hear that they got the funding?

hi!

i read that you went to the GS-Environment last year and i was wondering what it was all about. i just got the application today from a science teacher at my school and it seems like an interesting program. i'm not very knowledgeable in environmental issues or protection policies, but it seems like it would be an adventure and an interesting experience. i am going to pursue the biological/medical sciences in college.. do you think attending this program will help with admissions into prestigious schools? Also, what was your favorite part about the GS-Environment?

Personal stats: I'm ranked something around 3 or 4 in my class and the only other person in my class that received this application was the valedictorian (GS-Sciences). He's so smart i can't even begin to explain...hardly gets any answer wrong (ever) on anything. i'm a girl, minority, and i attend a catholic school. my grades are mostly A's. i play piano in my free time. i have participated in a community event in my town for the past 4 years and have been a team leader throughout. i'm in the spanish language honors society and am an active member of Habitat for Humanity and Spanish Club.

do you think i have a good chance of getting in?

thanks for the advice!

hi! for environmental, in addition, when did u find out from the school if u were nominated for your school? and which teachers did u have to get recommendations from? it is very cool that u got to attend. i can't decide between this and scinece. but anyway, thanks for ur response!

is the creative writing one competitive?

it goes through this process

nominated for your school

pass through the county level (superinten evaluates you I think)

pass through the state level

you're in gov school

apparently my teacher said you find out whether or not you made the county cut in late winter/early spring sooo ... feb/march

Hmm. The school's already nominated me.

I'm going in for Art. Too bad SAT scores don't come into play at all there.

Did anyone get preliminary application due dates?

SAT scores/grades don't really make that much of a difference in application

Mostly what counts is your teacher recommendations and your essay (at least for Environment and International Issues)

how do you know that recs and essays count the most, I thought PSAT scores and ec's were most important.

What's better: New Jersey Governor's School for Sciences or SSP?

has anyone here gone to gov school for international studies? if so, i'd really like to talk to you..

i'm also curious about what aspects of the app are weighted most

i would guess different school would look for particular characteristics. like, arts may consider your portfolio/recording very important, whereas other schools may look at PSATs or your transcript.

our school allows any junior to self-nominate themselves; then they choose the final school nominee. i'm torn between the school of sciences and school of the arts (i would be auditioning on cello). i've been told to pick the one i like better, but i really have no preference. i guess i would go with whichever school i'm more likely to get into....any advice?
