Hey, I'm a rising junior from NJ, as you can see from the title. I was wondering what it takes to get into the GOV School. If you know anyone who got accepted to either one of the programs, please post their stats. What do they look for? I mean would a 2200 PSAT be enough b/c that's what i have been getting on almost every practice test that i have taken. Thanks a lot!

Hey...yea i went to NJ Gov School this summer, for the school of International Studies....and believe me...it'll be the BEST TIME OF UR LIIIIFE...u'll meet SO many kool and SMART and TALENTED ppl...there were two kids there with 2400s and every three kid was like a state champion in sumthin...I think that
academic -wise, the science schools are the hardest to get in...for international studies...i think ur extracurriculars (especialy those related to international stuff) hv a good deal of influence...tho grades certainly do matter, its not ALL THAT crucial as it would be compared to science/engineering...cuz there, that's all they want....teacher recs and personal essays are really important too so make sure u get good teachers to write u one...i think my teacher rec helped me out the most....so yea....don't worry all that much about ur PSATs....

best of luck with everything man. hope everything goes well for ya

I am a rising senior, and attended the NJ Governor's school on the environment in July. It was an amazing experience and you should definitely apply (although whether any of the gov schools will happen or not is uncertain, given budget issues).
Anyway, about what it takes to get in:
I got a 219 on my PSAT sophomore year, and 199 Junior year...
That's not that great, especially that more recent one. I got the sense that the selection process is more based on recommendations and essays, as well as diverse extracurricular involvement. It seemed like almost everyone there had a bunch of interests outside of the environment, or science, or politics.
Geographically, they also try to keep it balanced- some from South Jersey, some from the North.

Which governor's school are you thinking of applying for? I'm sure the selection is different for each of them, especially for the fine arts. And Sciences is definitely more selective than environment- I have a friend who had better scores, extracurriculars, and probably recommendations than me who was waitlisted there.

NY doesnt have a governor school...>_<

I went to Govschool of the Arts NJ this summer

as you can probably surmise, scores didn't matter much there (although I personally have great scores)

for arts it's 100% about the activity's you're in and the audition/interview

Thanks a lot guys, but I'm not sure which one I want to apply to. I mean, I don't really know what I want to do in college. And if I do the science one and don't select a science major on college apps, won't it look weird? As of now I'm pondering over economics and business for college. I was wondering the same thing for all the other GOV schools. But I'm pretty sure I will either apply to science or internationl relations.
