NJ Prep/Board

Hello,
I am going into 10th grade and want to go to a prep/boarding school for 11 and 12th grade. I live 1 hr away from Peddie, which is my top choice. Should I board or be a day student? Also, I was wondering about Princeton Hun and Lawrenceville. I play lacrosse, so I dont know if Id make Lawrenceville. Its 14th in the nation. I have a 3.7 gpa in freshman year, and hope to have over a 4.0 weighted this year. Do i have a shot? any other suggestions. I visited boardingschoolreview.com, and peddie seemed the best fit. Thanks

I want to go pre-med at Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, or Brown, so a prestigous school would only help the cause.

why premed at Georgetown or Brown? sorry random but just wondering

i love baltimore... like i have liked hopkins since i was 5... i also live dc, and gtown has a sick campus. brown is in rhode island, and i love the ocean . all are elite schools. any advice on how to get into peddie...are my grades good enough?

Sorry I don't really know much about Peddie. But I'd guess that you have a shot, as long as you do well on SSATs and essays. I'd choose the day stud/boarding thing based on admission rates. Btw, I don't think going to a prestigious school helps that much in college admissions?

honestly, peddie's not so easy to get into these days. people ignore it (i think it's the name - when i first heard the word/name peddie, i thought "foot massage?" LOL), but it's a pretty damn good school

most schools have like a boundary restrictions, where if you live within ___ miles of the school you have to be a day student. otherwise, you board. excepptttt i think it's not always "HAVE to be a day student" im pretty sure there are exceptions. but check it out in case, and if you're given a choice... well, i would advise boarding just cuz the dorm life is a priceless experience, but then again that's my opinion so yeah lol

A few years ago it was easier to get into Peddie as a boarder than as a day student. That might have changed, so you should ask the school. In my opinion, it would be better for you to board if you live one hour away. If part of your commute involves Princeton during rush hour, it might take even longer than an hour.

Just look at the college matriculation and acceptances from your target schools to see how many are accepted into your target colleges. You might also consider Blair Academy which has reasonably good matriculation history at your 3 target colleges Blair Academy - Admission

I agree with Burb Parent, you should consider the traffic in Princeton area. As I know, Peddie only accept students who live within 30 mins.

Peddie and Lawrencevilles are very good schools but as a boarder, you should also try Blair (in north NJ) or The Hills School and Mercerburg in PA. They are all within 2 hours drive. Blair is so beautiful, we went there this summer for sports tournament, kind of regret did not reply last year.

As I know, Peddie is not easy to get in like few years ago (there are many threads about Peddie admission at this site, search it!).

Thank You for all the responses. I am a very strong writer, so I think I should excell in the paper. I am a tad worried about SSAT's, but I know that I do fine in the clutch. I am heavivly considering Peddie, and Lawrenceville seems on par. I would have to drop lacrossse, since it is too talented. Dont get my wrong, I have been playing for 7 yrs, but they are 14th in nation. I heard Blair was in the middle of no where...any truth to this?

edit : blair is presbyterian and I am catholic. I dont know how much that affects me but yeah.

Is it worth dropping lacrosse for lawrenceville? I dont really want to play in college since the schools I could play at arent as strong academically.

Blair is in the town/village of Blairstown which some might describe as the middle of nowhere. There are shops, restaurants, etc. in the village at the bottom of the hill. Some boarding schools do not have a town/village next to them. As a boarder, during the weekend you would have outings to New York City and Philadelphia several times a year. More typical outings would be to the large mall and movie theater within a 30 mins. drive, fast food restaurants, etc. There are many other outings offered during the school year, such as paintball, horseback riding, amusement parks, etc. What I am trying to say is that you will be kept busy with activities both on and off campus. However, if being next to a large city is mandatory to you, then Blair and Mercersburg would not be good choices. Blair is in a great location for nature lovers with the Delaware Water Gap National Park almost next door, the Appalachian Trail nearby, and large wooded areas in the 400 acre+ campus.

I just saw that you added that you are catholic. Blair has ties to the Presbyterian church, but welcomes students of every faith and no faith as well. It's religious requirements are far more lenient than those of the Episcopal schools we visited or researched. There are many catholic students there, so your faith should not be an issue. I think you have to attend something like 3 services a semester. Lawrenceville, which does not have a religious affiliation, also requires attendance at religious services (maybe it was something like 3 a semester faith of your choice -- at least that is what I remember from doing research a few years ago).

Good luck in your search!

Thanks Burb Parent. My family is very successful, but not high rollers hah. I would hope to get some financial aid grant, no matter the amount. peddie offers merit scholorships, which only helps the cause. It sounds stupid, but are there any scholorships or anything? I am beginning to like lawrenceville a tad more than peddie, but L-ville only offers 3 merit scholorships for returning students. Cost could make the decision easier.

I feel as if I could play lax at peddie, but not at L-ville. I would keep up winter track, but are there as many clubs and what not?

Also, as far as faith goes, I go to church and all, but I am not super religious. If provided by school, I would go to church. Thanks and any input on Lville or Peddie would be a huge benifit

I suspect that for a merit scholarship, you should offer the school something that they cannot get from their regular applicant pool. If a merit scholarship is your goal, you should cast a broad net.

Sorry, I cannot help you with more info on Peddie and Lawrenceville. Doesn't Lawrenceville offer a JV lacrosse team? They probably do, so you won't have to give up your sport.

As you probably realize, your parents need to qualify for financial aid. All the boarding schools of which I am aware offer financial aid to families that qualify. Award packages can vary from zero to above defined need. Posters have said that schools without super-sized endowments can also offer generous aid if they really want the applicant.

Good luck!

Lawrenceville, like almost all boarding schools, offers at least two levels of lacrosse - Varsity, JV and many have a Thirds team. The funster saw L'ville destroy a good New Canaan HS team last spring. Very impressive club, year in and year out...

At the risk of offending the Blair Team, lacrosse is not the most er... successful program there.

Thanks for all the help. I want to play higher end lacrosse, yet I do not want lax to define my life. And when Burb Parent said that I best cast a wide net, do you mean merit scholorships are hard to come by. peddie and l-ville seem to have a big endowment, so what would you say is the highest salary a parent can have that they would even offer the smallest amount of aid? ( i do not want to get into all the financial stuff here).

I think for one kid in bs the family income cannot be more than roughly 175,000. If both parents work you are probably not going to get fa. We looked at MAPL schools for lax so you can PM me. Our son is going to Deerfield.

Blair's ties to the Presbyterian Church are very loose and mainly in the past. The Chaplain at Blair before the current one was an Episcopalian. Not sure about the new one. There are plenty of Catholics on campus!

Thanks. I am not really into religion, though I would probally go to church on some weekends. I like both lawrenceville and peddie, and am in contact with peddies lax coach. I know I wont make lawrenceville, and may be forced to end my lax days until college club ball. Do they ever keep back juniors on jv? Also, what would give me the edge over the other applicants?

Blair could work, as Id instantly play lax there. How about Hun school of princeton? It seems to fly under the radar. If a day student, I will also check out princeton day school.

i know there arent a lot of people on here, but i would really appreciate advice

I think many are packing up and moving to their new schools this week.

Very true neatoburrito, I am also considering St. Georges in Rhode Island. Mediocre lax, great school, and beautiful campus.. Its nickname is St. Gorgeus! I searched and not much came up. Any experiences with the school?
