NMH Details

We are planning on stocking up on the basics such as pencils, pens, paper and notebooks. If he needs something else we will ship it or bring it up.

I also have a question about closed weekends. Are parents allowed to attend games on these weekends?

Keylyme - when you go to your son's games, do you usually take him out to eat or visit or do you attend the game and then off you go. My favorite restaurant is in Northhampton. I anticipate many visits there.

Lastly, can kids iron their clothes anywhere and is it worth taking out the additional laundry service?

Actually, I have another question. If we open up a Bank of America account then I assume that will work for everything since there is an ATM on campus???

keylyme,

do you know when we'll receive a packing list? i'm traveling for a lot of the remainder of the summer, and want to get a head start.

plus, who doesn't love packing lists?

hellosunshine - the class registration folder had a list of what to bring. I'm trying to figure out how much clothing my son should bring. He has a huge amount of clothing...

They weren't very strict about closed w/e's; usually it just means that you have to be there for whatever the special event is (if there is one), and you can't leave campus overnight. You are allowed to go for the day, though.

We did not usually go out to eat. Once or twice we did, but generally we would either eat at the dining hall with him or leave (he often had other things to do, especially on Wednesday evenings. He often came home with us after Saturday games because lots of times he had stuff with his club soccer team or just to visit us for a bit.

I don't think my son ironed once while he was there. The laundry service sends everything back pressed and folded. For dress shirts, I usually washed and ironed those at home.

Sorry, I don't know about the ATM. My son only used his student account to access cash.

minutes after i posted that my dad came into my room and said "look, i have a packing list!" i'm also concerned about how much clothing to bring, i have quite a large wardrobe, and don't know just how much of it i should bring.

You will have one smallish dresser (5/6 drawers) and one closet. My son had a corner room and he shared his closet, but it was very large. You might have room for a small portable dresser (like the 3-drawer Rubbermaid ones), and there is under-bed space.

This may be silly, but I found a group on Facebook called "I hate this school" and this is the description:

"Before I went to NMH I was a pwner...now I am a pwnee"
-Unidentified Student

For anyone who gets pwnd on a daily basis by Northfield Mount Hermon. This is a support group in hopes of making it through the year. Please post photos or write about how this school has done you dirty.
Outsiders of NMH can join, but in order to do so must have a killer story of how their school owns their face.

I know that not everyone can love a school, but this group has 104 members. I'll admit that I'm a little more nervous now.

hellosunshine- I checked out the link on Facebook. From what I could tell out of the 102 members, there were only a couple members that were actually from NMH and at least one of them graduated in 2007. I'm not sure what the whole "pwner vs. pwnee" thing means.

I can tell you that my son did an overnight at the school to see what it was really like and everyone was really cool and very friendly.

What is a "pwner"?

Sunshine....My oldest son graduated as a four-year senior in 2003 and absolutely loved his experience as did every one of his friends. He and his friends were good students and very involved (student leaders, peer mediators, musicians, varsity athletes, etc.). I believe this is just sour grapes coming from a group who did not fare so well, and most likely by their own poor choices.

My youngest son is excited for his sophomore year to begin as his freshman year exceeded his already high expectations.

FYI....I checked out this site and I think it might be someone's idea of a joke (and not a very good one). Most of the kids on that group are the school's top scholars and athletes; several going to Ivies. I and my son know many of them personally (a couple of them are close friends of my son....and they love the school). One is actually from abroad and was here just as an exchange student, but loved it so much he decided to come back next year even though it meant jeopardizing a national team spot in his sport.

There is, however, a nice NMH Alum site with over 700 members (when I signed in to facebook, a popup informed me that my eldest had become the most recent "fan of NMH").

Thanks for the reassurance. I had a feeling there couldn't be that many NMH students who don't or didn't like it.

I suppose I was nervous because at my brother's school there are a lot a lot of students who dislike their experience, even though it's a great school.

From urban dictionary:

PWN (verb)

An act of dominating an opponent.

Great, ingenious; applied to methods and objects.

Originally dates back to the days of WarCraft, when a map designer mispelled "Own" as "Pwn". What was originally supose to be "player has been owned." was "player has been pwned".

Pwn eventually grew from there and is now used throughout the online world, especially in online games.
1. "I pwn these guys on battlenet"

"This strategy pwns!" or "This game pwn."

Two things:

First, it is a joke (bad one, I say)
Second, my son says you shouldn't rely on facebook to provide real info

Are there any train stations near NMH?

Hmmmm, there might be on in Brattleboro, VT....which is about 15 minutes away.

Oh, you see I'm trying to convince my mom to let me apply late, but she says 3 hours is too long of a drive to pick me up just for the weekend. What should I do? Would I be able to take a train home? Are there other ways to make it easier for my parents to see me on the weekends without them having to drive all the way up?

Brattleboro is a really nice town. Is that a place that people are able to go on the weekends?

MDog795, NMH might not be the school for you if your folks are going to want to see you every weekend. My suspicion is that if your parents showed up for lots of weekends you might find it awkward.

They probably just don't get yet that you don't visit your child every weekend. Once they take a tour of a school in a few days they'll probably accept that.

I don't know...we were there most w/e's (son played a sport every season). My son was happy to have us. Still 6hrs round trip is not so bad if you only do it every couple of w/e's.

Brattleboro is a pretty cool town, but the students generally go to Greenfield, MA (which is also a nice, unique small town).
