laxtaxi - I think having the year in 9th grade is a big help. Then we can evaluate whether to do a repeat year or go into 10th. We are getting a much earlier start than with my son at NMH. He didn't decide to apply to BS until the fall. We were finishing visits in January. (That was a pain!!!)

How much homework does your daughter have each night? I know my son has to do some work during the day in order to complete all his work. I am really impressed by the amount of writing that he is doing.

The last time I went to China Gourmet there were bugs in our food (this was in January??)...never went back. I'd recommend New Fortune for chinese in Greenfield...

Boarding school review is so outdated, you wouldn't even believe it. It might say last updated 7/18/08, but they could've just altered one tiny little thing.

I don't know if the acceptance rate is accurate -- you might just call them and ask. It does seem that alot of kids that are aiming for Groton/SPS/Exeter/Andover use NMH as a safety school -- so when they get into another school they prefer, they choose to attend there. I think NMH has issues with it's yield -- but they are working on that. I do know that when I talked with the admission office last year, they said that they don't accept just anyone -- they really are looking at kids with solid academics that fit well into the school. I was told they will leave beds empty rather than just accept anyone who applies.

warriorboy -- my son came from a public middle school, with about 15 min. of homework a night. He seems to be adjusting well -- he has the same thing to say as laxtaxi's D: study hall makes it so much easier to focus on your schoolwork.

I believe it was mid 40's this year (acceptance rate). This info from a letter received last month from the head of the school.

That is true...they are selective and it sometimes leads to empty spots because NMH does not yet have the name and prestige of the Exeter's and Andover's (which are 100 years older and accepted only the wealthy elite in their early days).

warriorboy...my older son went from public middle school directly to NMH. My younger son spent a year at public hs. He is having a somewhat easier time I would say.

arky - that's nasty. Fortunately, we didn't see any bugs.

It seems as if the acceptance rates on BSR are out of date. I know that Loomis accepted a smaller % of students than indicated on the site.
During our revisit day, we were told that NMH had a record number of applicants. I don't believe there were any empty spots this year.

It seems as if more people are considering BS as a viable option and many of them don't care about being in a super competetive enviroment.

You can feel free to call the DL at any time. We only rarely heard from our son's DL last year; he would call occasionally to check in and see if we had any concerns.

I've decide to wait until parent's weekend to talk to the DL. Things seem to be going well. It is a more difficult course load, but my son seems to be handling it.

Keylyme - I heard that your son is injured. How's he doing?

I was up there again today to deliver lax equipment for my son's tournament. I am amazed at the new football field. It was very impressive. I wouldn't be surprised if they are able to attract some decent players with that field. Every time I am there, I am amazed at what a fabulous place it is.

So who is going to parent's weekend and are you going to the reception on Thursday night? Is that a dressier event. I looked at it quickly and didn't pay much attention to the fine print. I need to add another night to our Marriot reseration.

He's had a several minor injuries....I think he must be growing. He's been playing on a moderate ankle sprain for a few weeks now. Luckily, no major injuries to sideline him. He did sit out the second half of one game last week (maybe that is what you're referring to?). That was a charlie horse from being hit hard in the thigh. He was back for the next game. The trainers there do a great job and are just as on top of things as at my daughter's D1 university. They really take care of their athletes.

This is such a great thread! I love hearing all the details of parental life getting ready for and moving into dorms etc. You all are SO funny! I am so glad to know that NMH is really good inside...

My big sis from sorority went to NMH many years ago and has always raved about it. Took my son there this summer just to see the campus and he was very impressed and had a much better "feel" for the place than other "top" schools we looked at... mind you this was just a bricks and mortar tour. He is still in 7th grade. We will certainly be interviewing there next fall.

No....we will just arrive Friday morning, attend the classes, have teacher conferences, and attend the music program Friday evening. We will go home and return Saturday morning for the athlete brunch and game.

keylyme - You are lucky to be so close. I am thinking of skipping Thursday night. This way we can get the kids ready for school and then head up on Friday morning.

How did we end up so far back. Not sure if anyone is around. We'll be leaing tomorrow as soon as we get the other kids on the bus. I love the atmosphere on campus and can't wait to visit again... Hope to see some of you there.

keylyme - maybe this time we'll actually meet up...
