Generally Friday is the main day. You go to all of your child's classes (they are abbreviated) and can meet with all of the teachers on that day as well (conferences may be schedulef for either Friday or Saturday). There is generally an arts-related program in the evening (music & dance) and sporting events on Saturday.

I think one of the antique shops has an auction on Saturday...not sure of the time, though. I want to say Tuesday nights at 6 and maybe 1 or 2 on Saturday (but could be 6 as well).

Keylyme -- thanks!!

so -- it looks like we need to fly up on Thursday. I think we will plan on flying back home on Monday -- that gives us Friday and Saturday for any planned/organized activities and for our son to show us around. Then we can spend Sunday taking him shopping and spending some one-on-one time with him. He would have Monday and Tuesday off from classes to just hang out with friends. does this sound like a good plan?

Sounds good. Are they off Monday and Tuesday? I thought it was just Monday.

I am just looking at the line calendar ( http://www.nmhschool.org/calendars/2008-2009_Line_Calendar.pdf ).

It says:

October 17–18______Friday–Saturday _Family Days
October 18–21Saturday–Tuesday _Fall long weekend begins following Family Days activities and athletics
October 21__Tuesday __________Students return (7:30 PM)

so it looks like they have all Monday and Tuesday off (they return in time for study hall on Tuesday).

I talked with my son -- he thinks that visiting him on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be great and having Monday and Tuesday to chill in the dorm with friends will be a nice break for him.

That's a nice break; I think they usually just have the Monday off.

I think it will be a nice break -- and then Thanksgiving break is about 6 weeks away. Do many of the kids go home for the long weekend?

We're planning on staying for the activities on Friday and driving home with D on Saturday so she can visit at home. Then I will drive her back to NMH on Tuesday. 3.5 hours each way. Sigh. I knew this would entail lots of driving when I signed her up for this.

I was wondering if the dorms are open during the long weekend. I thought that the kids had to leave?? I guess I was wrong.

We had a nice day today. Our son was very happy with all the goodies we brought him. We met a few of his friends and they were all great guys.

We then went to a bunch of antique shops. We didn't end up finding anything too exciting, but it was still fun.

We are also bringing our son home for the long weekend. It's only a 1 1/2 - 2 hour drive so it's not so bad. I have to get busy cleaning out the mess that wvs left behind!!

sounds like the dorm will be pretty quiet -- I am guessing that many of the kids will head home for the long weekend (the dorms do stay open for the long weekends). I guess I better ask my son if that will be ok -- since it may just be a handful of kids staying.

I guess my son will come home for the long w/e (last year he did) unless there are sports practices.

keylyme - Are the dorms open during this time?

This might be a foolish question, but does the mail center carry stamps, envelopes, boxes etc?

I don't know....I would think they are as it is not a long break, but I am not sure.

I also don't know what the mail center carries; I would think they would sell stamps....and envelopes can be purchased at the book store. I don't know about boxes. If you call the main number, they can direct you to the mail center and you can ask.

It looks as if I might spend more time in Northfield, Mass than I planned. It turns out that my son "despersately" needs a haircut. The same person has cut his hair for years. Now I need to find a decent hair place to bring him on Sat. I have no idea where to take him. He did mention a nearby mall, but the closest I could find was in Keene.

Does anyone have any ideas??? I did the Google search and it didn't help much.

Email me warriorboy.

Warriorboy: there are a bunch of haircut places in Northampton, about 30 mins. down I-91 from Northfield. A couple that our family has used are Hair Phanatix (I know, goofy name but good haircuts), and Jennifer's Hair Company. There's also Changes Salon which I've never been in but looks good for young people.

You can do a yellow pages search but they're all listed under "Beauty Salons" which seems very dated to me.

I sent you an email.

My son's friends all go to Greenfield; when my older son was there he went to the barber right on Main St. in Northfield.
Greenfield is only 10 minutes away and there is a shuttle that goes there on Wednesday and Saturday. The schedule should be posted in the mail room and on SWIS.

Well, I feel as if we are becoming regulars at NMH. My 13 year old and I went up to NMH to watch the JV soccer game. I had no idea that NMH had all those soccer fields.

My son finally got his hair cut. We went to RMD in Greenfield (thanks Linda for the suggestion). They only take walk ins so it worked out perfectly. They also did a good job.

We ate at China Gourmet and the food was fabulous... It was a nice visit but I was exhausted so I'm not sure if I'll be heading up as much as I thought I would.

My DS is still loving it. He has a lot of homework. Fortunately, he had at least 2 hours a night in 7th and 8th grade. My 13 year wants to go to NMH next year, but he has about 5 minutes of homework a night. Have any of your kids come from a public middle school amd managed to adjust to the work load?

D was in a public middle school and was in public high school for 9th grade last year. She seems to be coping fine. She articulates that it's a lot easier to be focused on your school work during the scheduled mandatory study times than it is at home, because EVERYONE else is studying at the same time so it's not like you're missing out on anything.
