That really stinks that you can't do anything outside of school. though, one of the pros of boarding school is that you don't have to- usually, those activities that weren't offered in your public school ARE offered at boarding school, which makes it redundant to do those things outside of school instead of in.
I'd be giving up Envirathon and club volleyball.

warriorboy....I think "dish" is exactly what it sounds like....washing dishes/loading the washers. My son enjoyed his kitchen job; he enjoys cooking and didn't mind the prep work.

You might still be able to fit in some club games; it all depend on ow flexible the club coach is willing to be. My son did not have to give up club soccer (it just entailed some heavy-duty driving!)

Saer...often if you are doing something at a very high level (think a sport that needs to be trained year-round....soccer, gymnastics...or you are a high-level dancer), a boarding school can really hurt your training. Sometimes, there are ways to make it all work, but I think it usually means parents who will drive you to and from your club activities and then back to your school which in turn requires cooperation from club coaches and your school's administration.

Did you get an 08 soccer schedule or are you just going by last year's? I don't see a current schedule posted yet.

I don't really do anything at a "high level" that going away or stopping club participation could hurt my training...But that's a big concern for a lot of people, I'm assuming.

Keylyme- most of the Founders League athletic schedules went up online this week. I Don't know if NMH posted theirs yet, but you can figure it out from the others. Your son plays varsity soccer, right? Mine is fast but very small, so we are keeping him on thirds for now (at one of your rival schools).

Keylyme: For NMH, I checked the Athletics section of their website, and didn't see calendars for 2008 posted. But, if you go to their Calendars section, they seem to have the sporting events listed.

Thank you for that tip, BrooklynGuy. For all you NMH'ers who are playing a fall sport....go to the NMH website, click on "Calendar", then click on "Calendar List". All of the sports are listed along with their schedules. (warriorboy....I check both V and JV soccer on this calendar and both are up).

I just made note of the JV schedule for soccer. I'm assuming that's where he'll end up.

My husband and I have been discussing what to do about his select lax team. There are 3 tournaments and 3 practices. ( I think they will let him skip tryouts.) One of the practices is on a closed weekend? Can I still take him away from school for the day??? Also, two of the tournaments will probably involve Saturday games. I'm used to driving him all over, but he can't be in 2 places at once. The last tournament is after soccer is over. Maybe he can just do the one tournament.

My son is psyched that there are so many soccer games. With premier and travel soccer they only played 8-10 games/season.

Off the sports topic, but do most kids bring fans for those first few weeks?

D tells me nothing. Are students' academic calendars for fall out now? Where do I look? If it came by snail mail, it is probably in her room which means it is dead to me (see thread on Moving Out).

You can get your daughter's classes by logging onto the NMH website. There is a section on the left once you are logged in that you can click on "fall semester". You may have to click one of the buttons on the top about class registration first. My son's schedule has actually changed since it was first posted. His "job" for the first semester is listed also.

warriorboy...

You can take your son off campus on closed w/e's as long as it is not overnight. Make sure he gives a slip to the dean's office by Wednesday preceding the w/e he wants to be away (this is required even for non-closed w/e's). Sometimes, the w/e is closed because of an event/activity that has required attendance. In that case, your son might have to stay.

Definitely have him bring a fan.

Are academic schedules available online to incoming freshman prior to registration? My daughter is curious but has not yet been given a user name and password.

did your D sign up online for classes? The website, sign-in name and password she used then will work for her to access her schedule -- it should list classes, teachers, work job, etc.

Warriorboy -- does your son's schedule include any co-curriculars (or whatever they are called)? My son has Habitat for Humanity and United Way Board for first term, nothing for second term and Model UN for third term. He also has "Dish" for his job -- he is hoping to have the chance to work at the farm at some point.

No, hsmomstef, she submitted her course registration in writing.

Then I don't know -- I would call the school and see if she can get her sign on name and password.

hsmomstef - I'll have to check to see if it has his cocurriculars listed. I think he only signed up for Model UN. He did sign up for at least 1 minor course. My only concern is that the work will be much more difficult than it was last year especially with the honors classes. I don't want him to get carried away and sign up for more than he can handle.
Did your son end up taking Spanish 2 or 3? Did he ever get a placement test? My son's schedule showed regular Spanish II until his test was evaluated. I hope it will be a good placement for him.

bluefish- Your login info was sent in the folder that had your paperwork for class registration. If you don't have it, email the help desk that is on their website or call student affairs and they will email it to you. What year will you be in?

Does anyone think it makes a difference what type of sheets we get i.e jersey verses reg cotton?

My son has both jersey and regular cotton sheets. I don't think he cares at all, but I prefer the regular cotton. The jersey ones get all stretched out, the pillowcases don't retain their shape, and they just don't look as nice.

hsmomstef - My son has Model UN listed for the 3rd term during "C" class. Does your son's job say "dish/gsa. This is great because my son has never done a dish in his life. Mainly, because he's always at a game or practice.

I think I will just get the regular cotton sheets. This summer is flying by so I need to start getting things organized.

My big decision now is about the day that they move in. I am a teacher and start work on the 27th. In order to be there when my son moves in, I'll have to call in sick. (It's just a day of boring meetings.) I just can't imagine not being there to see my son move in, meet his roommate and say goodbye etc.

warriorboy -- Thanks for pointing my daughter to the correct password in the registration packet. (I was still using the one given for admission purposes. How's that for being on top of things?) She is very pleased with her activities and will be joining your son in doing dishes.

Bluefish - you're welcome. What period does your daughter have dish? I think this will be another way for the kids to meet other kids that are not in their classes.

My son wanted me to see if there is minor course that focuses on writing skills. I only saw the freshman elective. Does anyone know if there is anything else? He has nevr had a strong writng program in school.
