Boy, that was some terrible typing in the last post.

So now we have 2 days to pack and get ready. The rumor, keylyme, is that your son has anything that anyone could ever need at school. He's the go-to guy. Is he in Shea next year?

My ds is finishing up his summer work and is really psyched to start school. Going to the camp was a really good idea. It also helped get him in shape.

Is everyone else packed and ready to go? I have a feeling that registration is going to be a zoo. I can't imagine where everyone will park.

Laxtaxi - did your daughter ever get her work done and her room cleaned?

WB648, I was just in my daughter's room with a tape measure. I have decided that the carpet is destroyed anyway so, as soon as she leaves, I am going to rip it up and lay down a hardwood floor. I've wanted to do it anyway and I'll use her room as am experiment (that plus a sale at 2.59/sq ft for red oak was too good to pass up). It was hard measuring the room though because I couldn't lay a tape across the floor. There was no clear space from one side to the other! It's still unbelievably disgusting.

D remains in denial about laundry. She says she counted and she "only" has like 14 sets of underwear and needs more. For what? To decorate the room?

She did finish her reading - though I tease, she's actually quite self-motivated. Today was her last day of work. I don't know for sure but I'll bet she cleared over $3k for the summer selling hot dogs from a cart (and using her tips for spending money). She has a strong work ethic. On the other hand I bet she barfs at least once on her first day of sports practice. She hasn't exactly been diligent with her workout.

Meanwhile, S is packing too. He leaves 9/3 for his year-long exchange program abroad. It is his senior year of high school, this is sort of a gap-year one year early. So my house will go silent in ten days. Strange.

No, my son is not in Shea; he wanted to be, but did not luck out. (It is a draw and you get points based on length of time at the school).
He thoroughly enjoyed pre-season camp. He pointed out your son to me when I dropped him off. He does tend to pack everything under the sun, and he has traveled to many camps and away games, so he definitely knows what he feels he needs. My husband and I moved all of his stuff in to his dorm room this afternoon(and never even saw him even though we were there for two hours). Quick and easy as most of his stuff (linens, toiletries, school supplies, etc.) were all packed up from when we moved him out last year. All I had to do was empty his drawers into suitcases and carry out all his hanger clothing. I have been shopping in bits and pieces for the past few weeks.
The campus is a bit of a mess.....I don't know where everyone will park for move-in....they have a lot to do in the next few days.

i'm ready as i'll ever be! so incredibly excited. admissions called on monday and asked me to be a tour guide this semester for my work job instead of doing dishes, so that's going to be awesome!

My son is doing peer mediation. The mediators and student leaders were brought from sports camp to the Mt. Hermon campus and moved into their dorms as the training for mediators was the 25th and 26th and right through the start of school for the student leaders.
Don't worry - you did not miss move-in day!

Help! My mom is a teacher and does not want to take a personal day the first two months of school- but NMH only offers interviews Monday-Friday, n Saturdays. Or at least, that's what their websites say. I can either wait til November or December (ehhh) or... Well, that's it. Hehe. Do they offer Saturday interviews or is the website correct?

We're about to get in the car. Everyone's calm but excited. Watch for us, you can't miss us. Mom, Dad, D, S along for the ride. We'll be arriving in a station wagon if that helps!

^Update. What a day. LOOOOONG but great. We're home now. D was happy and ready, nervous and excited. Lots of familiar faces among faculty, staff and coaches. The campus is a mess! I'm sure NMH isn't happy about that but the weather wreaked havoc from what I understand. It will all be beautiful again I am sure.

Remember the 24 hour rule, everyone. Don't react or taken action in response to a sad or negative phone call for 24 hours minimum. Otherwise you're likely to be reacting to an experience that was over 10 minutes after you hung up the phone (or received your last TM).

Hope everyone else's landing was as satisfying as ours.

Finally, the big day is over. I was thinking on Wednesday night about why we didn't just keep it simple and go the local public school like most people we know. By the end of move in day yesterday I knew exactly why. It was my husband's first time on campus and he was wowed.. The campus is a mess, but it is going to be fabulous when it's all done.

It was a wonderful experience to feel that my son was truly "wanted". Every adult was so positive and excited. (I kept thinking about my son's freshman class at the local PS with it's 900 students) I'm just in awe of what a wonderful place it is.

keylyme - I was hoping to meet you. My son saw all of you, buit I was not nearby.

stef - where were you hiding? I figured I couldn't miss you and your son. I couldn't remember your son's first name. Send me a PM with his name and room number.

My son did call just a little after 10:00. His words were "this place rocks". So it was a great day.

We are all done -- son is dropped off and doing great! I wanted to meet you guys too, but it was fairly chaotic -- so maybe parent's weekend will be a better time. My hubby and I will be up for parent's weekend in Oct so maybe we should all plan to go out to dinner or something (I love that Blue Thai Ginger place in Greenfield).

Sorry I seemed to drop off the face of the earth -- we actually headed up to NMH on Saturday for football camp. I am staying with another CC poster (thanks again!) and will head back to Colorado today. My son loved football camp -- even though he sprained his ankle the second day. He met a bunch of kids and felt very comfortable.

He got to move into the dorm Wednesday night, which was great -- he was all moved in when everyone else was trying to bring stuff up the stairs. He loves it (which I knew he would) and called me last night and this morning to tell me how great it was.

Warriorboy -- I will pm you his name and room number.

HelloSunshine -- my son was also asked (and assigned on his schedule) to be a tour guide for his work job. He was very excited about that!

No tour guide duty for D. She got salad bar. She spent the whole summer working in food prep so it won't exactly be foreign duty for her! WB648, so glad your son's introductory day was a good one. Stef, Keylyme, I agree we need to try to catchup at Parent's W/E.

Our communications last night were sweet. It was all by TM. D was sad because she wanted to make friends right away. We suggested she grab her roommate and go make the first move with some other newbies. Apparently they did, and later she texted that she had three new friends - from Boston, California and Korea. Followed by a smiley face. Nothing today - which is good. Besides I think they are on a camping trip.

Parent's weekend might be a good time to meet up. I'm not sure what the schedule is like. I just made reservations for 10/17 because it seems as if it is a 2 day event. Does anyone know???

I need to ship some items to son from Staples. They don't ship to PO Boxes. Do you think I can just put his name and mail center for the address and it will make it there?

keylyme - what time is the convocation on the 7th? Do local family members usually attend these events? I'm assuming my son will be playing jv soccer, and another son is playing football (at home) so it'll depend on the kid's schedules.

laxtaxi - how long does it take you to get to NMH?

I think you put your students full address on the package (including the PO box); Staples can just deliver it to the One Lamplighter Way address and the school post office will put a note in the student's box alerting them that they have a package.
We have generally just gone up on day 1 of family day, gone to all the meetings, sat in on classes, met with teachers, and took in the concert in the evening. If my son has a sporting event on Saturday, we would just come back. Sometimes, the sporting events are not at home, so you might want to check that. The only reasons for staying two days would be if your child had a home sporting event on Saturday and it was too far to drive home and return the next day or your child was not able to schedule all the teacher conferences for Friday. I have found all of the teachers to be very accommodating and have changed conference times while there to make our schedule work better.
I will get back to you on convocation time - it might be on the website.
Ask your son about Hoggerfair - it is a lot of fun (I think it is this evening).

I checked online and it shows "Convocation and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Rhodes Arts Center" at 4pm on Sunday, September 7th.
Yes, parents who live nearby generally attend these types of events. The Convocation is a nice ceremony although it was a bit "grander" before the consolidation of the campuses as everyone was not squeezed into Memorial Chapel (it was held in the Auditorium on the Northfield campus).
