Got DS’s scores and he got a 1510 - 760 CRW, 750 Math. SI is 227! We live in NH but he goes to a day school in Maine, though either way, he should be completely safe. Last year, NH was 216 and ME was 214. His school is very small, but class of 2016 had six SF out of just under 80 seniors and this year the class of 2017 has four. He had a 209 last year with literally no prep, and this year he did some prep on Khan, but not much, and then took the PSAT prep test a few days before. I messed up and scheduled his SAT and ACT in October, so he was kind of overwhelmed, so I limited the prep severely. His school does no prep during school hours, so it’s not really a huge advantage other than just providing students with the practice test materials, which I suspect most schools do. He also didn’t do too well on his SATs, 1440, which is odd bc he scored a 35 on the ACTs. He’s not looking at any state schools, though, and the few that do give big scholarships for NMS expect you to rank them #1. The schools on the top of his list, which are some Ivies and USNA, give no money for NMS. Still, it’s super exciting to have him score so well, especially with so much going on that month!
@1810048 SI is calculated by taking the sum of your section scores (reading, writing, math) and doubling it. The highest you can get in a section is a 38, so the highest SI is a 228 (38+38+38, which is 114, then doubled).
NJs cutoff last year was a 222. You would need the cutoff to drop three points for your state to be a semifinalist this year. No one knows what they will be yet.
222 in Connecticut, do you all think that’s enough?
@hope469 - according to the website someone posted above, Connecticut was a 220 last year, with low volatility for the chance of a significant change in cutoff and they are estimating this year’s to be from 219-222. With that said, no one really knows anything. You are above last year’s cutoff, which is really good. I would be cautiously optimistic, but know that no one can tell you for sure until September!
What is the SSI for commended this year?
If I got a 218 for my SI, is that good enough for Florida? Is the cutoff for Florida expected to move up?
@3scoutsmom Fingers crossed! Thanks so much for saying that really helps me cool off a bit about it!
My DD was a 202/98%. Last year was 209 Commended. Seems like this year it should be lower?
What do you think about semifinalist status for Massachusetts? The cutoff was 222 last year.
Does anyone know how accurate the compass predictions were for last year? We are in Arizona and it jumped 4 points last year to 219. My daughter has 221, so here’s hoping it doesn’t go up again!
Last year was an anomaly because of changes to the PSAT. I believe Compass was closest of all the predictions, almost everyone else was too low. I think you are pretty safe at 221.
I agree with Ollie113, Compass was the closest last year though many of the state cut offs did fall on the high end of their predicted ranges.
What do you think the commended cutoff is? I got a 211, not the best not the worst. Do you think I’ll make it?
What is the SI cutoff in texas, because I got a 212 and I’m afraid that its a bit low
Isn’t Commended top 3%?
@frizzyboy10 Texas is one of the higher cut off states, last year the cut off was 220. Last year the commend cut off for the country was 209 so you should make that.
Just help me understand. D was 98% (an on the higher side) but only had a 202.
So how can Commended be 209? Seems off.
Compassprep predits the following for NJ:
New Jersey 221-224 222 Low
A 209 this year would be closer if not a 99%?
Any 209s out there?
…meant @3scoutsmom. Thanks.
