NMS cutoff predictions for class of 2018

Asking that isn’t going to make the mail truck go any faster! In the meantime, watch your High School Musical DVD again.

Still nothing from our good friend Art.

Where are the NMSC headquarters? If the mail went out on Monday, some high schools close to them could be getting their mail today… just sayin as I dangle my feet off of my Pennsylvania ledge…

Are there any other sites we can check for crowdsourcing data besides CC and Compass?

Did the mail go out on Monday or Tuesday? Because if Tuesday, and if “going out” meant the letters left the building at the end of the day, then the earliest possible local deliveries would be today (Wednesday).

I called yesterday (Tuesday) and was told they were going out that day.

ETA: They are located in Evanston, Illinois @Winky1.

Re: State Roll Call - Kansas

Re: Colleges w/ good NM Packages - Wichita State offers a very generous NM Package with Tuition, Room/Board and a book stipend. With OU significantly reducing its NMF Package (which shocked me!), WSU would be a good school to consider. If a student is interested in any studies related to aviation, WSU is actually a great choice. Here’s some info for anyone interested: http://webs.wichita.edu/?u=merit_scholarships&p=/national_merit/

The University of Kansas also offers a $10k/year NM scholarship ($10.5k/year for OOS, but then in-state students get the $500 via another scholarship to keep it fair) and this will cover basic tuition, but not fees, books, parking, Jayhawk All-Sports Pass and room/board. https://admissions.ku.edu/tuition-scholarship/freshman (Editing to add that KU doesn’t gouge with fees. Fees are there, but aren’t as high as some other colleges I’ve read about. For example, I recall that OU charged significant fees and we haven’t seen that with KU.)

If our HS is going to notify students this week, it will probably be on Friday afternoon (IF they have received the info). If DS does not make the cut, we will still hear about who DID make the cut because most of his close friends are in the same general range he is. I’m definitely starting to get more nervous as the week progresses.

We could take bets on the day someone breaks the dam. I am picking Friday. Friday someone, perhaps a home school parent, reports in to Art or maybe even this site. And I hope it is KY like last year! That would work well for me as long as the breaker of the proverbial ice has a 219 or less.

@GoAskDad - What did OU cut? I have read this from others as well but was not familiar with the old to know the difference.

My daughter has a great GC. I could ask her on Friday if she gets the word or does the principal. She understands my craziness

The silence over at Art’s blog is deafening.

Just called NM. Rep confirmed that notices were sent out yesterday. I asked if they get sent to GC or principal. Answer: principal. I asked when/how we will know the required confirming score. Answer: that will be explained in the main announcement on Sept 13th.

She also said they like to give two weeks for all of the mail to reach the respective principals.

Here’s hoping for our sanity that the USPS bulk mail travels a lot faster than that!

@ShrimpBurrito , it certainly is! Art, we need you! Lol

Well, I could copy the principal on the email to the GC or vice versa and tell that we need the info. because we’ve got to plan our trip to Alabama!!!

@Winky1 this thread may help answer your questions re: OU. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-oklahoma/2006031-changes-in-fall-2018-in-state-nm-package.html#latest I just stumbled upon it today.

We seriously considered the OU NMF Package for DS1 and we even visited OU (but it was just too far away for his liking). I’ve been wondering where all the OU National Merit mail was for DS2 and thought that perhaps his SI was not going to be high enough and that this was one clue. I still don’t know if his SI will be high enough, but this might explain why he hasn’t gotten any mail.

We would have considered OU for DS2, but not now. It’s a shame the NM package has been reduced so extensively.

What is “Art’s Blog”?

Glad you’re back @GoAskDad; those were some crazy days back with the class of 2015, filled with nervous excitement and lots of worry, worry, worry that was somewhat alleviated with all of the good humor and comradery from that great group of parents.

This time around, I’m a bit more seasoned than I was as a “rookie” on the 2015 team, but still excited (and happy to say a little less worried) as my D18 now gets to go through the process.

@prodesse
Because of CC’s terms of service, I’m not allowed to post a link to a blog. But…

A brilliant, patient man named Art is one of the founders of a test prep company called Compass Prep. He runs a blog on his website. There are two blog posts that discuss Class of 2018 PSAT and National Merit cutoffs. He has historically been very accurate with cutoff predictions, and the comments section acts as a crowdsource for determining actual cutoffs before they are officially released by NMSC.

@prodesse Art runs Compass Education Group, and his blog, Compass Prep (no space), often covers National Merit topics such as 2018 cutoffs and research.

We’re not allowed to link (because blog), but the relevant keywords are above.

Again, No dog in this race, but I love following it! I get soooo excited for you parents and kiddos! I am pulling for everyone here!

I firmly believe that Art is on some kind of nature retreat, doing yoga in the woods with no internet access, as he prepares for the onslaught of NM-related blog comments. I sure hope he’s properly rejuvenated soon and that he either creates a new post or updates the one with <30 comments. That older one, even though it was written in April 2017, somehow has comments that go back to the beginning of 2016. The comments are painful to get through!

What’s that you say? You point out that nobody is forcing me to obsessively scroll through 1400+ comments? Well I say nuts to you!
