Sorry about your D @Winky1 , thanks for the update on PA, if this is true, my son made it. Exciting.
So sorry @winky1.
@Winky1 , I am SO SORRY about it going to 219! I hate that it’s one point - ugh!! I know you called it but I was still hopeful. Please keep us posted about your D’s journey. All the best to her!!
@Winky1, so sorry to hear this. I hate that she missed by one.
So sorry to hear that Redhounds.
@Winky1 Thank you SOOOO much for the long awaited news for PA! Best wishes on your daughter’s application!
This missing by one is a feature of the new PSAT (again, lots of conversation about this last year). The scoring is so compressed with large bulges at certain score ranges and ratchets at even/odd score intervals. That’s the way the test was designed - it’s kind of a poor test for this specific purpose (not a big concern with CollegeBoard as NM is not where the money is for them).
Anyway, whether you hit or miss might have more to do with the number of NMSF’s allocated to your state than anything else. It’s bummer.
This thread is moving fast - hard to keep-up with everyone! So sorry to hear of those missing their state cutoff by a point - and so good of you all to take the time to post your info to help everyone else out!!
@redhounds - Thanks for sharing the Iowa info. Unfortunately, my son was sitting on a 215, so not the news we wanted to hear…
@ShrimpBurrito I’ve moved on to pistachios. I have already forgotten twice not to rub my eyes, which I am doing often out of frustration over lack of information. This morning I tried to convince 2018 son to press his face against the glass Counseling Office wall and give his best Oliver Twist/lost, sad puppy impression in the hopes somebody in there would crack, but he refused.
I may try it later myself, though.
@Winky1 Thanks for the update. This was the result I expected so while disappointed for my DD with a 218 I’m not surprised.
Where’s the info for IL this year??? A bit skeptical that no homeschooling families made NMSF. Or is the info. buried deep within the comments section on Art’s blog? Searching under “29” (for Aug. 29) not helpful. Searching under “IL” even worse LOL.
@TexanIndian While your explanation on why they break down by state sounds reasonable, the process still has a major flaw. In many states, there is a HUGE difference between the big cities and rural areas. It is simplistic to think that breaking things down by state achieves the goals that have been stated. Even in populous states like NY, CA and TX there are big cities where the schools are better and the socioeconomic conditions are better relative to the rural areas in those states. If they really wanted to break things down, they would do it at a finer level. It would be more work but it is possible. And if you do it by county it shouldn’t even be that difficult. A farming county in NY or CA is VERY different from the county containing Manhattan or Palo Alto. Similarly, there are areas/counties in the high threshold states are basically identical to counties in low threshold states.
@JBStillFlying I’m with you! I’m dying here waiting for info on OH! No one here or on Art’s board are posting anything on OH!
@shelleee there are four of us waiting and watching for OH, including @PoppaSmurf and @dangkat5. I will let you know if I see or hear anything.
Can anybody explain why NMSC does not release cutoffs while sending off mails?
While missing by one may be new to this version of the test, it had it’s problems in the old revision too, where you would lose maybe 5 or 6 points for just one question!!! Scores are more compressed, but other than the illusion of a higher score before, things are probably more similar than not.
Congrats to those getting good news, and hugs to those who are not.
Thanks @HB_Dad. Are you on the ledge like us? DD has a 219!! We are so nervous!! I keep hitting refresh on this site like that is helping!
Been lurking for a while and figured I needed to go ahead and create an account. Pretty anxious to get the results here in MI. My DD is sitting on a 217. Man, it will be rough if she misses it…
@shelleee Exactly the same situation here. DD has a 219 and I cannot get anything accomplished at work. DD has no idea that I found this site . . .
