NMS cutoff predictions for class of 2018

National Merit wants to get all the drama and ceremony they can out of the process.

Keep on keepin’ on all of you Ledge Dwellers and those still waiting - I am going to log off and sulk a bit, but I do know amazing things await the 218ers of The Keystone State!!!

This thread is great - I’m really psyched for those of you whose kids have made it! I am still laughing out loud at some of the posts!

“Can anybody explain why NMSC does not release cutoffs while sending off mails?”

Well, @prodesse ^^ may have a point, but more likely they want the local schools to be able to release at the same time as the press release. The thinking is that bulk mail - and probably int’l mail as well - will have delivered by mid-Sept.

Edit/update: oops sorry answered wrong question. why NOT cut-offs? Well, there’s a bit dif. between, say, WV and MA, for one. They DO release cut-off information to the schools, despite posts to the contrary.

Sorry, I know this is a dumb question, but if you are at the cutoff number, like if I had a 219 in PA, I would make the cut right? Congratulations to all those who made it and good luck in the college process for everyone!

if the cut-off is 219 then anyone with a 219 or higher is NMSF.

No state has confirmed finalist BELOW Art’s 2018 “most likely” predictions at this point. At least one reported cutoff ABOVE his likely predictions. As he reported, upward trend seems to be holding across the ~16 states for which informants have reported results. Things are not looking hopeful for those of us hoping Art’s predictions for our state were a bit too high.

But, as they say on election night, it’s still early…

@pleaseend2018, yes if you are at or above the cutoff you made NMSF.

“But, as they say on election night, it’s still early…”

Esp. since IL, OH, WI, and MI haven’t reported in yet.

oh you are too funny!! ROTFL

They do not release the score cut-offs because they don’t want to emphasize the differences between high-scoring states and lower-scoring states. School funding levels have a lot to do with it, of course.

I am hanging over the ledge in Ohio with my son at 218. Come on Ohio!!! At least one person in Ohio knows - I looked it up on Facebook and their is a public post by a school from yesterday congratulating a girl (no score mentioned)!

@bradsmom- There are 5 of us that I count now from OH waiting to hear something! I’m right there with you. My DD got a 219. Fingers crossed. Wish you all the best.

@Donnelltech I feel you! My kid is at a 219 in TN. Right on Art’s prediction and one above last year’s cut off. The anticipation is nuts!

Have there been any new updates from TX? Can anyone else confirm 221 made the cut (other than the one already posted)? Is there anyone with a 220 in TX that did make the cut?

Hello! I have been following this thread for quite some time to see if anyone from Ohio would post. I see everyone is awaiting results from Ohio so I thought I would help. My principal informed me today that I am a semifinalist with a score of 219.

Best of luck to my fellow Ohioans (and to everyone waiting anywhere). Positive energy being sent your way.

Thanks @JJ5963. That’s very nice of you to let us know!

Hi, a New Yorker here. Did anyone from New York receive any sort of notification of NMS? I’m nervously sitting here with a 220. Good luck to all!

Anyone from Indiana? Waiting for some news.

For my fellow ledge sitters who didn’t make it, here’s a page out of my D’s book…“Yay! Now I don’t have to study for the SAT, and I don’t have to go on all those college visits you wanted me to!” (My D took the ACT). Guess that’s one way to look at it. Sigh.
