No chem 144(advanced general chem) in autumn 2011?

look there. thats pretty disapointing. i wanted to take it. anyone wanna let me know if im missing something or something? but to me it looks like its not being offered?

Course offerings change from quarter to quarter. Some classes will show up every quarter for a year, and be entirely gone the next year only to reappear again. Some classes will show up 1-2-3 or 4 quarters in a year. That’s why we so eagerly await the posting of the schedule to see what the offerings will be (as well as the time/days of the week).

And no, the course you listed is not on the time schedule you linked to.

■■■. Cause general chem seems to easy for me but honors too hard so advanced general seemed good. Great. Looks like ima have to step it up and take honors. Oh well. I guess if I’m majoring in it I should haha. But wow that’s really dissapointing. I wonder why they’re not offereing it this year. Anyone got an guesses? Budget cuts? Haha screw the stupid economy.

There were over 1000 students who took CHEM 142 fall quarter last year. The average GPA of all the classes is curved automatically to 2.6. Given the fact that you will also be taking MATH 124 and having taken the class myself, I can assure you that general chemistry will not be “too easy” for you.

Chem 144 has always been offered in the fall in previous years. I am guessing that they quit offering it because of budget cuts. You could email the chem department to ask if it will be offered again, though.

chem isn’t bad if you put the time and effort into it… trust me
yeah, 2.7 is low for an average, but if you take it seriously and get help if you need it, you should do above the curve…
most people I know who got below a 3.0 are ones who constantly skipped classes, thought it’d be an easy class and didn’t care, only memorized and didn’t understand, etc

K well whoever said it wouldn’t be easy for me doesn’t know what thwyre talking about haha. I love chem, taken 2 years of it in highschool. Self studied for the ap test. I’ve gone online and studied their powerpoints on what they talk about and I already know everything they cover in chem 142. I have zumdahl, the same exact book they teach out of, and I can do everything in the book. Pretty sure chem 142 would be easy for me. But yeah I have a question. What exactly does the curve mean? Like I understand what a curve is, you know like the average score one gets. But what does that mean for an wntering student. Does it mean theior more likely to shape your grade towards 2.6, the curve, or what? Thanks guys.

What did you get on the AP test?

The curve means that a large majority of the class will get a grade in the range of 2.7 +/- one standard deviation. Also realize that it is a weed-out class intended to get people to drop out before they’re in too deep; there are many smart people and many people also come in with a background in high school chemistry.

Ill be taking it in a few weeks. Okay well I’m sure I can do better than a 2.7. Anyone know anything about honors chem? Does that class have a set curve? How much harder is it really? And I like the idea that it caps at 75 students. I feel like that’s a big plus.

so perhaps you should try honors chemistry (the median is 3.5), or just move on and take the subsequent chemistry courses, like organic chemistry.

yeah its just pretty dissapointing that budget cuts are really taking a toll here. that advanced chem was really gonna be a great opportunity for me. oh well. guess i just gotta let the wind take me where it blows. its just sad we cant even do anything, and its not even our fault, and it gets taken out on us.
