No Honors Housing? Not Good

*Not getting Honors housing would be very concerning. It is one of the reasons my son is considering Alabama next year in addition to the great NMF package. This may make us reconsider his options. *

??? I don’t understand your concern. If your child is going to go to Bama for the NMF package, then send his money in after he’s accepted. You’ll have first pick and he’ll get the room of his choice. However, even if you don’t pay early, NMFs are reserved honors rooms - although perhaps not in the desired hall/location. So, if choice is important, get your money in early.

Those who are having problems now waited to pay and now are having to check and check and check. That’s the way it is at nearly EVERY college. Actually, it’s worse at other colleges - because other colleges don’t have nearly as many honors beds as Bama does. Those who waited to pay would likely be having a similar or worse situation at another chosen college.

I know that at many colleges, people have to send money in early to have a chance at ANY housing…so they send the money in and decide where the child is going later.

Honors beds will open up as students change their minds or parents decide that they can’t afford honors housing, etc.

Did anyone sign into honors housing at opening time? I wonder if whatever was available at that point was snapped up within minutes…like football tickets.

Check first thing in the morning and late at night…that’s when kids often change.

I’m so sorry that y’all are having this housing aggravation. I told my D about it last night in the car and she then started rattling off the housing nightmares that have been griped about at school including a couple of schools going to triples in a room vs. doubles (I think she said American.) Doesn’t make the UA situation any better, but I think things shake down over time. D has a few friends who double deposited & just made their final decisions and there is also “summer melt” (when students decide not to attend a certain school after accepting.)

Exactly. That is common all over this country.

You could be at the U. of Maryland. They run out of housing and have to put freshmen six to a room or you could be sent to an area hotel.

Year before last year UT Chatanooga ended up housing a large number of students in a local hotel after promising more rooms than they had.

It is true housing is at a premium at all the Universities and I know that many of my friends’ kids had to submit deposits way before they knew where they would attend. I have also known people out here in CA paying more then it costs to live in the super suites for a TRIPLE in a regular dorm!

I know that many of my friends’ kids had to submit deposits way before they knew where they would attend.

Exactly. That’s why the “wait and pay later” strategy is a risky one.

we signed in yesterday the moment it opened. so it was not a matter of us waiting a half hour and everything being snapped up.

we were on and my DD’s chosen roomie were on. roomie found a room with 2 spots (the ONLY one we saw the entire time). she picked it for both of them but apparently katie’s part never went through. i called housing and got the usual “too bad so sad” response.

i did have one moment where a bunch of rooms popped up, but when i clicked on something they all went away and it logged me off. don’t know if those were actual available rooms or it was just a glitch.

Mike, that stinks & is frustrating. I’m sorry. Seems like housing has had a rough couple of moments during this season. I’m sure that it will end up working out in the end, but I like all my loose ends to be tied up & I’d be exasperated too. {{Hugs}} to all of you dealing with this.

I just called Bama Housing and left a message for Dr. Ross Bryan - Director of Residential Communities

I mentioned that honors housing is completely full and asked if there are any plans to invite more upper division kids to move to The Bluff so that more honors beds would open up. I also asked if there were any beds/suites that were currently “blocked out” or held back for various reasons and would such rooms be available soon.

I forgot to ask if there are any other plans, such as arranging with another apt complex for upper classmen to move to.

If more people called him with similar or other concerns, maybe he’ll do something to make more rooms open up.

Another person to contact…
