No Honors Housing? Not Good

The only housing the system shows available is Paty…ugh. I thought there was plenty housing for the honors kids? Did anyone get honors housing tonight?

There should be plenty of housing left, but possibly not at this time. Housing is known to block rooms from being selected only to open them up at a later date. If this problem continues, I’d suggest contacting your regional rep or the honors college because UA does want every honors freshman to get honors housing if they want it.

SEA_tide, thank you so much. I’m sooooo frustrated! It seems that was one of the reasons my son chose UA. He didn’t make his final decision because he had a few other options and had to wait on ‘those’ letters before he made his choice. I’m sure many of the kids did the same and to know they don’t even get Honors housing now is a BIG bummer. I will call them tomorrow…thanks for making me feel a little better!

I got honors housing, but I’m with all sophomores (as of next year). I looked to see if there is anything more, but they said they were out of housing…

Are all the non-honors super suites taken, too?

There will be some kids who will switch out of honors housing for various reasons, so keep checking.

Call tomorrow and ask what honors beds are still available. Be sure to talk to someone who really knows…not just someone who answers the phone.

Also, if you still get a negative answer to availability, ask if Bama is going to ask more honors kids to move to The Bluff. And, ask if they expect some of the ones who have reserved honors housing to change their minds over the next month or so.

I would also call Jami Gates and see if she can get your son in an honors dorm.

Krazie: my D picked her room in March & 2 of her roomies are going to be sophomores. She’s not looking at that as a negative, but thinks that it might be advantageous.

Just remember, there was someone who changed their room 33 times last year, so things must open up over time. But that stinks that you have to stress about this now. Ugh.

Krazie…keep checking…especially late at night. I’ve noticed that kids often change their registrations (for dorms and classes) kind of late at night. I don’t know why that is, but they do.

Checking again. Thankfully, our boys are still intact. But only spaces available in Paty for boys.

I wonder, should the kids, even if they’re in honors, put themselves in a space so they can have an on campus room, and then switch later?

I know for kids coming from far away, housing availability is a big issue, and as many of those kids will be flying in without cars, they may not want to be placed in The Bluff, as it is off campus.

On a confident note, though, son withdrew his admission from the other colleges that accepted him at least three weeks ago, yet he is still getting letters about housing, orientation, et cetera.

Perhaps Bama is still processing the admission and housing withdrawals, and spaces will indeed become available.

Good luck to all.

If I see anything open up, I’ll be sure to post.

How do you know if your roommate is a freshman, soph, etc. I don’t see where it tells that info?

D found them on Facebook & saw that they were both UA class of 2013. The last girl to join the room “friended” D and they both found out they were incoming freshmen.

so facebook stalking during room searching :)

currently there are NO OPEN ROOMS for girls, honors or otherwise.

Remember, there are kids all over the country who are on wait lists at different schools, so there could be several students who committed earlier to Alabama who will switch if they get into their top choice. It also does take some time to withdraw one’s name from a school, so hang in there.

As for putting yourself into a dorm, my son, who will be a sophomore this fall, had a terrible time, at first, getting the dorm (Ridgecrest West) that he wanted. When he went online the second day of priority housing, there were no suites available. So he put himself and his suite mates in Riverside North. Later that day, he moved everyone into Ridgecrest East, which is non-honors. The following day, there was an opening in Ridgecrest West. His girlfriend and her suite mates took that – he told them about it, too. About two hours later, a suite came open in the same building, so he snagged it.

M2CK, there would have to be a nice incentive for some upperclassmen to relocate to the Bluffs. Some do not have cars, and the bus transportation between the complex and the school, well, it’s not all that impressive. The bus stops at one location. There are no set times for bus pickup and drop off. That worried me, because my son does not have a car at Alabama. And it’s a hike to walk down Jack Warner to get to the Bluffs, particularly at night. If something is done to guarantee better transportation (I e-mailed housing on this one), maybe some of the upperclassmen would move this year.

Momreads brought up a good point. We met a few upperclassmen during our visits to Bama that were moving from The Bluffs back to campus because those on scholarship would have to pay for housing during the summer months. If they waived that policy, they would probably get a lot of upperclassmen back in the Bluffs. Another idea would be to offer free parking decals to students living at the Bluffs. Do students living at The Bluffs have to have a meal plan? If so, waiving the meal plan would be a good incentive for upperclassmen to go there as well. Of course, Bama has got to make some money on the deal. They are paying for this housing, one way or another. Perhaps offering these incentives to the kids that aren’t on housing scholarships would sweeten the pot. I can’t see them giving kids free housing, plus parking, plus no meal plan. They’ve got to cover their overhead somehow.

Technically, upperclassmen aren’t required to have a meal plan even if they live in campus housing (which is a good rule). I’ve gotten quite a few e-mails from UA announcing that housing for the Bluff was opened up, but I won’t move there at this time for many of the reasons that have been mentioned. If there was some additional incentive to choose the Bluffs over other off-campus housing, many non-housing scholarship students would probably do so.

Those who live at The Bluffs aren’t req’d to have a meal plan. I doubt many at The Bluffs have a meal plan…or maybe they just have that small Bama-50 meal plan - for an occasional meal in a dining hall. That would provide 10 weeks of lunch at a dining hall. That’s probably all an off-campus kid would need.

I do agree that The Bluff needs a better Crimson Ride schedule - including one at night and weekends. However, it’s not odd that it only stops at one place at The Bluffs - the complex is not that big…just 3 buildings in a row. The Crimson Ride doesn’t typically have stops that are that close to each other. Kids often have to walk to a stop.

M2CK: The problem is not the stop at the Bluffs. Rather, what turned off some upperclassmen to moving there was that apparently the bus has just one stop on campus. At least that’s what they were told by housing.

Not getting Honors housing would be very concerning. It is one of the reasons my son is considering Alabama next year in addition to the great NMF package. This may make us reconsider his options.

i think the NMFs got a room assigned to them.

if you decide on UA early in the process, you willl have no trouble getting in honors housing.

Quote:

if you decide on UA early in the process, you willl have no trouble getting in honors housing.

That is correct, but some kids had several options they had to wait on to come in so they could weigh all their options. Even if Bama was one of their first choices, it would be crazy not to wait to see what was offered. So that makes it difficult to make that early decision. :)

we were in the same boat … had to wait for the financials to be right.

of course, if i was getting a NMF package, i would be more willing to risk the 200 or so bucks. trust me, it would be worth it to not end up in the position that we are in to “check every day from now until july 2 and wait for an opening to pop up.” that’s a quote from the housing people.
