OK here's the deal im an out of state student, in June i received my transfer degree from a local community college. I am currently taking a gap year because im going through some personal things, such as gender transition. I want to take a year off so when I do go off to a University I will feel more comfortable and appear more as my true identity. I am currently 19.

I was originally gonna go to a school in my state but have always sort of wanted to go to school in Cali and am thinking why not apply to one or two.

My community college GPA is a 3.39, but my last 3 quarters there I stepped it up and got all A's each quarter. So I know this isn't great and don't want to waste my money and energy applying to a school I won't get into, so what Cali school do you think I'd have a chance of getting into? I've been trying to learn about the cali schools but there's so much info it overwhelms me. I am hoping to be in or around the Los Angeles area. And it has to be a public school due to costs. Thanks guys.

I forgot to add my major, I plan to major in psychology, but am also very interested in criminology, maybe as a minor.

With a 3.39 and psych major, it’s a little harder to suggest some schools since that major is tends to be more competittive because of its popularity, but I hope to point you into some right direction.

Use this page and the links on them to see how your OOS school completed any of the reqs for an upper-division transfer applicant . . . almost no CSUs and UCs accept lower-division transfers:
[CSUMentor - Plan for College - Transfer Students - Transfer Applicant Overview and Definitions](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)
[University of California - Admission requirements](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/transfer/requirements/index.html)

Typically OOS students end up having to call each specific school to determine which of their OOS courses might transfer to a CSU or UC.

These are the CSUs and UCs in the L.A. area in case you want to view their individual websites (in no particular order of importance):
CSU
CSU Channel Islands
CSU Northridge
CSULA
CSU Domingues Hills
CSU Long Beach
Cal Poly Pomona
CSU San Bernadino
CSU Fullerton

UC
Los Angeles
Irvine
Riverside
Santa Barabara is the next closest, but not exactly in the L.A. area

Currently, OOS is actually very appealing to UCs and CSUs because OOS pays a higher tuition rate than IS and this can help some schools that are hurting from state budget cuts. This explains why OOS students admissions were at an all-time high for the 2012-2013 school year (Freshman applicants, not transfers, but still . . .)

Are you going to be able to be full-pay (no FA)?

FA might give us some but probably not much

Can you comfortably pay (no Parent PLUS or outside loans) CA OOS tuition?

Yeah I get tuition from an outside agency they cover it all. My family just has to come up with the housing costs

CSU Fresno (Fresno State) has a good criminology program. I know a lot law enforcement people who have come out of there, including a few chiefs of police.
