No merit scholarship yet -- should I email them?

I applied to CSE in December and received my decision just about a week later. However, I haven’t received any notice of merit aid yet, either in the mail or in the online student center, although the need-based estimates are there (just a couple small loans). I have a 1560 SAT and 3.84 UW GPA and am from Washington state, so I think I should be receiving a national scholarship. One of my friends from the same HS already got notice of a $10k national scholarship, despite not filling out all of the optional essays and having a substantially lower SAT score (1450 or so). He received his initial decision later than I did.

Should I email them now, or wait until March 31st, which is when they say everything will be announced by?

@w00pw00p i would wait. Merit aid is rolling I believe. If your friend is in a different college they could have given it to him sooner. I would probably wait until the deadline to see if anything comes through.

@Henxnr thanks for the advice. My friend also applied to CSE.

@w00pw00p oh ok, could possibly be he filed fafsa sooner? I have no idea why else. Or Could be underlying circumstances as well. But hopefully you hear back soon!

On that note, did you and your parents fill out the FAFSA? My kid has now been awarded 3 merit scholarships from the U of MN (2 earlier, 1 very recently) and it said right in the paper work for 2 of them that we would not have received them without having the FAFSA in. And believe me, we qualify for no need based aid at all.

@MusakParent yes. I received a physical letter from UMN confirming they received the FAFSA a while ago, and they already posted need-based aid on the student center.

OH good, I just wanted to make sure that wasn’t a hold up for you. And maybe that info will help others too. I was surprised.

I did email the onestop student services eventually. They said that it is still possible to receive a merit scholaship in the coming weeks but that the “large majority” are already out. Is there any valid reason someone with my stats and decent essays/ECs would not get a scholarship, or must it have been a mistake? I think I am going to contact the admissions office to check whether I am still being considered then attempt the freshman scholarship appeal process.

My D19 was admitted to CSE in November, her scholarship information came about 2-3 weeks later. First saw it on the portal, then a letter came via mail a couple of weeks later. I did contact the admissions office recently to see if any additional merit money was possible and was told it is “possible but not likely”. She received the Gold Scholar Award. We did complete the FAFSA but do not qualify for need based aid. She has 4.0UW GPA, 35 ACT, National Merit Finalist, admitted into CSE and Honors program, in state student. We were hoping for more merit money as there are several nice full tuition + room/board scholarships available as a National Merit Finalist, but she really likes UMN.

Finally received scholarship letter today, but it’s extremely underwhelming…$5k national scholarship. I was expecting $10-$15k, like my friends with similar stats to mine. I will certainly choose Purdue or Cal Poly over UMN at that price :frowning:

Did they email you or just a package?

@Sofi15 I received package in the mail before anything online. The financial aid estimate in the student center updated a few days after the package arrived.
