If they arrive…Any chance my son will hear by Christmas, or is the fact that he didn’t hear anything yet a sign that he won’t? (He applied Nov 1 to CSE; accepted Nov 20.)
We’re out of state…35 ACT, 4.21 GPA W/2.91 UW, Top 3% in class of 625. He won’t get financial aid, so merit is critical. Thanks!
No one answered you and I have no idea. I recommend you go to the “College and Universities” tab and see if anyone posted last year when they got theirs. My son is in college on the east coast and he got scholarship notification in March.
Is that 3.91 UW? If so his chances of getting something are decent. Esp. given his class rank. His stats might even be good enough for CSE-honors: https://admissions.tc.umn.edu/honors/review.html
@JBStillFlying Thanks! Yes, bad typing on my part. UW GPA is 3.91. He’ll graduate with 14 AP classes, so the “class rigor” thing should be there. I’ve seen some people post about getting scholarships already, so hoping it’s not a bad sign since he hasn’t heard anything yet.
@MFHP96 if this year is anything like prior years, the Nov. notifications are for applicants who were admitted in October when UMN began sending out decisions; most of them had probably applied well before Nov. 1st. There is still time and the UMN admission website indicates that applicants will be given full consideration for scholarships and honors - timing might be an issue but hopefully he’s included in the next batch of scholarships sent out (whenever that might be). BTW, the two largest ones tend to be the National (up to $10,000 per year for OOS’ers who don’t have reciprocity) and the Gold (preference given to NMF’s who list UMN as first choice). There are also presidential scholarships, among others.
Son was accepted into CLA in October and admitted to honors program early November. What are chances for academic scholarship with following stats and when do they typically advise?
GPA : 3.95 uw, 4.54 weighted
ACT 34
Class rank 1/400
NMS commended scholar - missed semi finalist cutoff
AP scholar with distinction
OOS but state with reciprocity, so in state tuition
Honors will be correlated with scholarship money. His stats are great for CLA so hopefully a presidential scholarship or similar will come his way. Good luck to him!
Any idea when they will start advising? He has other opportunities, but Minnesota is his first choice right now. Also he is contemplating transferring to CSE. From what I’ve seen, he shouldn’t have difficulty getting in, but what about honors?
Most of his AP classes have been science and math, scored 4’s and 5’s on all.
He’lll need to talk to the honors advisor about whether honors will transfer with him. Very difficult to get honors in CSE as an entering student - not sure how it works for transfers from another UMTC college.
Those are excellent stats. My daughter’s are similar, and she was offered honors program and $15,000 per year for four years, although that includes the Gold Scholar award that is dependent on her being named a National Merit Finalist (which shouldn’t be an issue). She applied early October and received notification in mid-November.
My son hasn’t seen anything on honors or scholarships yet. But I did get an email inviting him and me to an honors showcase and reception, so I have to assume he is admitted to the university honors program.
@Twentytwentytwo - funny story: a couple years ago my D16 and a whole lot of other kids who were definitely NOT honors program potential were erroneously invited to that showcase. We all posted about it, and within 24 hours an apology e-mail that explained the “computer error” (it’s always a computer error) was sent out. So just make sure that your son really WAS invited to honors. The way to do that is to check his Application Tracker portal. Honors designation should have been added to the admission message. If it’s not there, call them. If it is there, then snail mail should follow within a few weeks.
@Twentytwentytwo I hear ya. The money talks. They don’t post scholarships on the Tracker - that comes in the regular mail (which is slow this time of year). One way to get a “potential” heads up is to log onto his FA page to see if they’ve posted anything yet. It’s still pretty early in the process, but perhaps scholarships automatically populate the FA portal once they are administered.
@hosh150614 - not sure but it’s probably good news right?
Couple of things to understand about honors: 1) they tend to notify via your Application Tracker and snail mail, not e-mail. So check your Tracker if you think you should have gotten honors, esp, if you are an international student (which I think you are) and the regular mail is slow. 2) Honors is actually by college which means that the stats needed will vary by college. Not sure what CLA’s stats are but here is the link to peruse: https://admissions.tc.umn.edu/honors/review.html
@JBStillFlying Yes, I am aware that stats vary by college. I actually found an updated version here https://admissions.tc.umn.edu/counselors/U_of_M_Admissions_Handbook.pdf I knew people from my country who get the Gold Global Scholarship but did not get into Honors Program so the chance is slim for me.
I checked the tracker but have not seen anything yet. Maybe I should be patient and wait.
My son (applied 10/31 or so) did get the information in the mail today (and then he checked his tracker) that he was admitted to the honors college for CBS. Still no scholarship info, at least not that he saw in the tracker today.
