Does anyone know if there are merit scholarships at UT that do NOT consider financial need?

After having done the FAFSA for D1 last year, I know that we do not qualify for need-based aid.

Looking at the ApplyTexas scholarship page, there don't seem to be any pure merit-based scholarships; i.e., ones that don't consider need as one of the deciding factors. For example, the Texas Exes and Terry Foundation scholarships consider leadership, scholastic record, and financial need.

Am I missing a gold mine of merit scholarship opportunities somewhere or does UT just not offer these?

Nope. UT has several college-specific scholarships that are given out to upperclassmen who perform well, but even those have some amount of need.

I got a $500 merit-based scholarship from somewhere at UT, it appeared in my financial aid package, and was the entire financial aid package. I have no idea where it came from. I don’t qualify for anything that is need based.

Dedman Scholarships for incoming COLA freshmen are merit-based, paying $13,000 per year for four years.

^^ 5 of them per year? I’m not holding my breath…

It depends on your major. It is my understanding that Engineering offers the most merit based financial aid. I believe that it is 3K, 6K or 9K per year, and the amount is very dependent on test scores. What are you planning on majoring in?

^ Really? I’m a prospective Biomed major and have good scores [2300+, 770-790 in Subject tests] but would not qualify for any sort of need-based aid. Am I a good candidate for merit money? This is the first I’m hearing about this.

Yup, it’s true! If you filled out the regular UT scholarship application that is all you have to do. The scholarships awarded through the engineering school are ONLY based on merit. However, they do not show up on the UT financial pages, nor are they administered thru them. A friend of mine was told that the amount that is received is in increments based on SAT scores. She was told you have to have a 1550 CR/M (or equivilent ACT) to get the top amount. My ds did and he received 9k per year for 4 years. The downside is that you have to have a 3.5 to keep it. That is a pretty tough standard in engineering at UT. Go to the scholarships page on the Cockrell website and you can read more about it.

Does anyone know when these scholarships (Engineering especially) are actually awarded? If I got one, it could be a tipping factor for going to UT, but from what I’ve read it seems like some of these merit scholarships are only announced after the enrollment deadline has passed.

My son got his letter from Engineering last year in February. He had to accept it or decline it by May 1st, which I believe is also the enrollment deadline.

As far as I’m concerned, I dont think Cockrell SOE gives scholarships for high school seniors- I think those are limited to undergrads who apply via the Engineering Scholarship application.

Edit:
Never mind… I guess this is there first year giving merit-based scholarships to Engineering prospectives :(

Hello… plz anyone suggest me some scholarship for me…I am an engineering student in AndhraPradesh,India.suggest me some scholarship which is purely based on merit and nothing else…
