No Scholarship

Ok guys...I recieved my financial aid letter the other day, and I recieved $0 Scholarship/Grants(i can understand the grant part since i am not considered to be in such a great need, although we arent rich). but I only recieved work study, a $400 loan, and the expected amount from Bright Futures. Work study was about 1200 a semester, and i figured I could get a regular job and make some more. My point is that i was hoping i could get a scholarship or something, so that when I get a job I can add it to my financial aid. UCF offered a $7600 scholarship, and when I recieved my financial aid from them they included a small, but good, scholarship. I remember when I attended some college planning seminar back in 9th/10th grade, it was mentioned that perhaps you can bargain with a college that gave you lower aid to the college that gave a bigger amount. I know UCF and UF are two different schools, but seeing that I was offered a bigger amount they can perhaps doing something. I dont know if already signing a letter of intent, might hurt my situation

Hopefully you all get what I am trying to say, i wanted to get everyone's opinion before deciding to call the F.A. office.

You can call them, but from looking at my aid for next year they only list my scholarships not the grants and loans I also recieved last year. I dont think they are finished yet giving out add. Just keep checking www.isis.ufl.edu under financial status.

howdy
current ucf student (actually chose it over uf and fsu), in a lot of cases you can negotiate financial aid but signing a letter of intent most likely means they will not give you anything else other than what was in the finaid pack. Since you are already going there they probably will not see any need to offer you anymore aid as an incentive. Also even if you had not already signed the letter of intent you might be able to get more money using the ucf money as leverage, but seeing as how most would go to uf over ucf, it is likely you would have only gotten a small amount if anything. I was also dissapointed in lack of merit aid after receiving sizeable amounts from both ucf and fsu, for what its worth.

thanks for the reply, I was thinking that.
I signed that LOI quicker than anything because UF is where I want to go but it really hurts when other schools are more interested in you.

yeah, that was actually a big point against uf and for fsu and ucf. It always seemed like ucf/fsu really wanted me there, and were really enthusiastic about me going there, but uf not as much. In fact uf even spelt my name wrong on all of the materials I received from them, except for the acceptance letter.

Also keep in mind that this is not the end of finaid for college. There are MANY MANY scholarships and grants that you can recieve through the college thoughout your undergrad career, whether it be for academics, essay competitions, or just awards within your particular department. So definitely keep an eye out on uf's finaid webpage, your departments webpage, or any other large organization with the means of giving out scholarships (alumni chapters give lots of money here at ucf) and I'm sure you can get more money.
Good Luck at Florida

i have a question about works studies. that's juss like a part time job at UF right? like being one of the computer monitor person at marston library? you don't need special skills to get work studies right? and u also get paid min. wage?do you also HAVE to work 10-20 hours a week? i was thinking more on the line of...8-9 hours...and this is a grant right not a loan?

sorry i'm asking a lot of questions. i'll prob call them monday but w/e if u guys know ne thing tell me. thanks

I don't know a lot about work studies (didn't qualify) only from friends who have it. Its based of of your financial situation (fafsa) and its basically a part time job on campus. You can pick from wherever on campus is hiring (library jobs are usually very cushy) and Im sure its not a loan. I think it is mainly giving students first dibs on alot of jobs on campus. Not sure about the hours requirements but they work around your school schedule. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I'm going to add to what isaidchowda said...its not a grant nor a loan, its a job(but i know you already knew that), so you get a paycheck and you can use it towards whatever you want...although the best thing is to use towards tuition/dorms/etc. Whatever your financial aid letter told you can earn is the max amount you can get, so depending on where you work on campus, just let your supervisor or whomever, know how you want your work schedule to be, most times they are helpful towards that. Now that I finished writing the reply, i noticed I basically repeated what isaidchowda, but oh well.

Thanks for the advice isaidchowda(you have to tell me how to say that), i have 2 definite scholarships that I am getting but the thing is, I dont know how much it is, so Im hoping its enough to cover dorms and books, since tuition is basically paid for. Once I start in college, I will definitely check out the specific college that I am attending for scholarships.

^thanks. i have another question. do i still get min wage pay on top of that???cuz if they are also giving me min wage...i'm def doing it

I did work study 1st year and was paid $6.50. Other jobs pay more esp. lab jobs (~$7.50-9.50). Library job pay ~$5.25, I think.

^DANG. i'm signing up fosho. $1200 per semester AND min wage. oh yea. do you need expierance with lab jobs? what do you have to do? and how many hours do you have to work a week?

sorry...iforgot to call UF today.lol

i thought that, for work study, the only money u get out of it is the amount in the award letter?

^hmmm can any one clear that up???

I would assume that regardless of what pay you get, you only get max amount. You're not working for a paycheck on top of what finaid gave you. You're working until you get your amount..(I dont know how it is if you hit your max, before the semesters over).

For me I figured that it will make more sense to get a regular job, I am getting 1200 in workstudy but I feel I can make more than that in a semester. But I am going to take it, if for some reason I cant get a job. (stinks that most jobs want you at 18...my birthday is not until Nov.)

i got a full ride.

IB.

^i'm in IB too. alll you have to do is pass it or take the ib courses and get higer than 1280 or 1270 on the SAT
