Need some advice please
There are no seats available in my city for the SATs. The site had an option on the side that would let college board find a centre. I clicked it, then they asked about what would be an ideal test centre for me and I chose the one closest to my home; now they’re saying that in order to arrange a centre for me, they need me to complete registration so should I still complete the registration or is it risky? Will I get a seat in my ideal test centre or not?
Will college board arrange a place within my city or not?
And can I cancel my registration after registering for a test or will the site still take the money?
I’m really worried ;-;
Can someone please help?
If your local sites are full, they’re full.
My guess is that College Board will find the closest open center to your home. That may very well be hours away.
CB will usually give you a list of alternative test centers. If the test date is crucial to you, then I’d either keep checking back and seeing if a seat opens up, because kids always cancel, or pick an alternative test site. I know I had to drive my kid 15-20 miles for a subject test once.
@bjkmom The closest one available is really far; I’d have to take a flight across the country which is just not possible for me.
@sushiritto If I complete my registration with payment, can I cancel it before the registration deadline and will CB return the money? I do check daily but there are still no seats available in centres within my city.
It sounds to me as though you’re too late for this date unless something unexpected opens up. Is there an ACT date available that you would consider?
@bjkmom I didn’t know that this could happen since this is the first time I’m giving an SAT exam. The deadline is on Novmber 2 btw and ACT carries no value where I’m from.
I’d suggest calling College Board and asking them about whether you can cancel once you find out the test location, since you haven’t received a definitive answer here.
Perhaps you worded this incorrectly, but no college gives preference to SAT over ACT (or vice versa).
@“Kathy V” Low balance + it’s Saturday so they probably won’t even pick up. I did contact them through email but they weren’t helpful in this regard. Their site says they only partially refund cancelled registrations so definitely not worth it.
@skieurope No. Where I am from (outside USA), unis and colleges have seats for students who give the SATs but not ACTs.
In English, we call that “burying the lede.” although I suppose we cold have guessed you are international from your grammar and spelling (which is perfectly correct; it’s just different than American English).
Anyway, based on that knowledge, I now realize, as you already know, that there are limited sites in your country. So getting back to your original question, no the CB will not guarantee your preferred test site. If it’s full, it’s full. Perhaps there’s an option to waitlist, but then the waitlist might already be full. If you do register, but are unable to secure a seat, I would assume that the CB, if they don’t give a full refund, would apply the fee to the next available date. But for totally accurate info, you should contact the College Board directly.
@atwist I’ll be honest, I wasn’t worried about the losing any of the reg fee. My kid took the SAT and a couple of the subject tests and if the “local” (still pretty far away) center wasn’t available, I’d still sign up for almost any test center in the area. The dates were more far important than the location of test center for us. Once registered, I’d check almost daily for cancellations and IIRC, a cancellation would eventually pop up somewhere closer and the CB site would let you switch test locations. But there may have been a “small” fee attached to the change in location.
Good luck!
Thank you all for your advice and suggestions!
A seat in my city became available - thank GOD - and my registration’s complete now
Thanks for the update.Good luck.
