One of my greatest regrets in high school is never having taken track
I am a junior now so it is a bit too late to begin
But I have been dancing (hip hop, theatre, ballet, traditional cultural dance) for quite a while, but most colleges count this as an arts supplement
My other EC’s include:
- National English Honor Society ( assistant VP in 10th, VP in 11th and just elected president for 12th)
- Current Events / Awareness Club (that I founded)
- Debate / Public Speaking Club
- Beta Club
- National Honor Society
- National French Honor Society
- Piano (9.5 years)
- Theatre
I’ve won a few writing awards and won first place in Engineering at the county science fair (3rd in the state though)
And have volunteered about 200 hours currently
I also help with freshmen orientation and tutoring
Does not taking a sport seriously hinder my chances of getting into an Ivy League?
(assuming my grades and SAT/ACT are decent enough)
(sorry for the long post!)
Not everyone is an athlete, nor would a college want to fill its classes with just athletes. There are plenty of other interests out there. Neither of my kids did sports and both ended up at great schools.
No sports is definitely not an issue; as long as there is something you are passionate about, you will be just fine.
Sports are just another EC… colleges would MUCH rather you have participated in a club that benefited the community or any activity that you dedicated yourself to and accomplished things with instead of a sport that you do just as another checkmark. I had the same question as you; I could’ve made the golf team, but I hated the idea… Because I didn’t join the team, I was able to get involved with 2 activities that are going to give me many more brownie points than a half-hearted effort at a sport.
Sports aren’t any different than another EC unless you’re a recruited athlete. I got into my top pick school EA and have absolutely zero coordination :))
As long as your other ECs are passionate and not just résumé padders, you should be fine!
