Wait wait wait -- change this attitude. I used to think the same thing too. Visit the essays forum. A lot, and start drafting a few ideas right now -- and press for harsh criticism.

The essays are one thing you have control of right until the admission deadline. Don't assume it's a strength you'll have under your belt.

At UChicago, your essay can outweigh bad grades or test scores, but probably not your current ones without a current boost. Do you think you work your ass off senior year and get all A's for a semester straight? [I've done this sort of change so it's quite possible!)

Get your test scores up. Don't give yourself excuses. Prep if you must (most efficiently if you can do it online and with a prep book or two -- you don't need no Princeton Review).

Where do you live? State admission policies will have a factor. Do you have a more convincing explanation for those Cs that you can explain? Without those C's I would say my grades used to be similar to yours.

Prestigious in your school ... but really unless the paper itself has won state distinction or something, to be frank I don't think adcoms will care whether it's prestigious or not. Now if you say, "high-impact" (like "I raised a local ecological outcry that prevented a developer from buying out the local wetlands" kind of high-impact) that would be a different thing.

Don't say that you plan to do a "few more things" next year -- that sounds that it's going to be a laundry list of stuff that isn't going to make a difference.

In my senior year, I joined debate as a first-year (because the team was only revived that year) but for a long time I had considered debate and I managed to win some nice distinctions. Don't join anything that you won't have a strong passion for.

Work hard. Don't rest on your laurels of your current strengths. Don't discout your current weaknesses.

thanks galoisien...yea ur rite...hopefully i'll bring my grades up next yr....nd no i said i was an international (heard that helps)...nd one more thing is...i think i can get 2-4 rlly good recommendation letters..including one from my headmaster....yea i'll check the essay forums too....thanks....nd yipeng,i dnt think im applying for financial aid...not 100% sure tho...

Bump!:d:d:d:d:d:d

For McGill and University of Toronto, admissions there is almost entirely numbers-driven. Unlike US schools where things such as essays, ECs, and rec letters play a large part, Canadian schools place almost all their emphasis on grades and test scores (there's a slow shift to US-style admissions, but I think the current system will be here for a while still)

Business/commerce at UT is very competitive from what I hear; I think the cut-off mark is in the high 80%s, if not into the 90% averages. Not sure about McGill but their cutoff marks overall are up there as well.

Have you taken the SATIIs yet?

nope..not yet...probally economics nd US history tho...oh nd yea now that uve mentioned it...my history teacher just graduated from Mcgill last year she already told me she'd be 'delighted' to give me a recommendation letter:D

look my dream school is Georgetown(no way) but i wud luv to get into NYU,Umich,George washington or UChic

stern is just as competitive as georgetown....

well yea i kno that..but come on i mean the avg SAT score there is 1860 nd the avg GPA is like 3.5....im not that far off plus i have good recommendations,a good essay and adequate amount of ECs...taking APs nexr yr too....all these apspects on my application must count for something?!....ok someone do this for me....tell me in the order im abt to rite in..whether i have any chance at any of these or not(remember to rite in order pls:D)
