Son Mike just spotted that his USNA website application page is showing he got a Nom from his congressman (as well as a duplicate nom to his back-up spot, USAFA). YAY! :) I assume we'll get a letter from the congressman in the mail soon to back this up?

And what's the timing on the next / last round, i.e. the Appointment decision? Do the academies usually make quick decision(s) on the appointment(s) once noms are in, or, as I have seen here on the forum before, can this drag out over months, i.e. right up to I-Day? And what's the norm? As with all of the potential candidates here on the forum, we hate the waiting game, but hey, I guess we should get used to it.....

BTW - AFA waived my son's DODMERB "knee" DQ but we're still waiting to hear anything from USNA on that matter. But we've got the other Q's and the Nom lined up, so he's another step closer to his dream of flying for the Navy.

My understanding is they meet every Thursday to review candidates. Here's that you might hear something soon.

RE: The nomination, it's surprising your congressperson has not already alerted you via call or letter. Is yours lame duck?

Whatever the reason the MOC has failed to inform you, if it's on the USNA system, betting Mike's good to go. Good luck and here's that it might be this day! And that your MOC's call will tell of both a nom and an appointment.

Come to think of it, could it just be he/she's trying to conserve on long distance costs?

The congress-critter (as some put it) is not a lame duck and is only 5 miles away but has a reputation of being late with everying. But they certainly made the Nom decision fast....

Process can be slow or fast; you hate to say it, but it depends on the strength of the application.

I know of one application that was not completed until, if I remember correctly, after the Christmas break. I think it was late January. The nomination came back in early January. The appointment was in-hand by mid-February. Less than 30-days after everything was completed.

You are indeed correct that some are not notified of an appointment until days BEFORE and sometimes AFTER I-day.

MOCs seem to vary widely in the energy they put into service academy nominations. My son's @ NAPS and a h.s. classmate is at USNA. Neither had an interview; the process was based entirely on paperwork submitted. Neither rec'd a call or letter when they were nominated. They had to phone -- after they'd heard from the Academy -- to confirm the nomination.

Congress has a wonderful program that allows citizens to purchase a flag that flew over the US Capitol to commemorate a special day. I'm STILL chasing the one I allegedly purchased back in March 06 for the Aug 06 day son took his oath @ NAPS.

Notification from your MOC varies with each office....some call, some send congratulatory letters, some even have reception luncheons/dinners! Our son's BGO called as well to "update" his status about a week after (allowing time for the MOC to contact him first)....

as for the next step: that is the appointment, and in the end it's the only thing that counts. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your perspective, the USNA takes it's time in getting out the appointment letters....LOAs have generally all gone out by now, so it is up to the weekly admission meetings and what filters out from those.... many will not hear until the March deadline.... and some will hear right up until I-Day....and the class of 2009 even had a few who heard in the days even following that!

Patience is a virtue....

As for the flag over the US Capitol, it is a lovely rememberance....we had one flown on the day our daughter graduated from her university, and another 2 flown on the day our son took his oath of office for USNA....one for him, and one for us! As for our son's flags, while I hope to never, ever, use the former, we proudly use the latter one on the front of our porch! (they arrived shortly afterwards, with a lovely letter)....

Just got off the phone with the MOC and it seems that the letter was mailed today, about two weeks after the Nom was sent in to the SA's (he got a rare double Nom to USNA and AF from same MOC - not too many here in NJ applying to AF). So it's in mail as the say!

BTW - mistakes do happen. One reason for the delay was that the MOC staffed mixed up who was supposed to get a West Point Nom with the kids getting Annapolis letters. Took em some time over the holidays to re-check everything! :)

^^^^ mixups do happen! So true! The year our son applied for his noms, he got the nod for USMA and USMMA.....while USNA was his first choice! He got letters of congrats for the first two, and never heard a word about Navy- until he called (I think with the idea of trading in those 2 for just one for USNA..... only kidding!) ...and was told "yes, of course you got Navy- wasn't that your first choice?"

Another excedrin moment.....
