So I'm in somewhat of a weird scenario. I graduated a year early from high school, began the Fall '10 semester as a freshman, and the community college credits and AP credits that helped me to graduate early also boost me up to sophomore status unit-wise (40.4 as of the beginning of Spring '11). I'm trying to get into the psychology major, which is capped and difficult to get into unless I somehow pull a 3.2 GPA - and probably soon, right, considering I need to declare in the near future? Is this correct? My current GPA is a 2.58; should I worry about this? I'm trying to finish up by '13.

you only need a 3.2 including cc class grades. how well did you do in those classes at your cc-iow, is the 2.58 your berk gpa or your gpa including your cc classes? as long as you have a 3.2 before you hit 80 units and have all 7 prereqs done, youre guaranteed admission. but if you dont satisfy these or have over 80 units, ive heard they accept as low as 3.0, but the chances are not as good.

be warned, enrolling in psych upper divs is a ***** even once youre declared. i speak truth.

gl mate

CC classes are NOT factored in unless they are part of lower-div psych requirements - so no, 2.58 is my starting UCB GPA.

Is psych easier? Is that why it’s capped or is it just capped because everyone wants to do it?

easy and everyone wants to do it.

Noo, psych is not “easy” - i’m taking it partly because it’s more challenging than sociology or social welfare or something somewhat related. It’s usually one of the most popular at the UC’s anyway but I wish they’d just make more room progressively, knowing that.

I think you have plenty of time to bring up the GPA before you declare… I don’t think the units you took in CC can count against you if you’re worried that you’ll have to declare sooner than trad students because of the units… Just do really well in the next 2 semesters, and you’ll have your GPA up to 3.2 in time.

Also, try to analyze why you may have done so poorly in the 1st semester… I know 1st semester is tough for everyone, but try to change whatever wrong choices you made in the past. Took too many units? Not balancing out the hard and easy classes? Time-management? Be sure to prioritize…

good luck!

My advice: stay away from psych.

I can’t exactly consider your advice if you don’t give any reasons for it.

It’s a useless major.

^must be a rhetoric major judging by those amazing skills of persuasion

:P

A Psych BA isn’t the most useful thing in the world, but it’s the type of major where you probably already know if you are going to grad school or not, because if you want to really do something with psych, you’re going to need to get the MA or higher. As long as you know you want to go to grad school, go ahead, otherwise, there’s not a lot you can do with just a psych BA…i’m sure there are a few things.

Note that there is also no Psych minor at Cal.

^ True. I’m taking it to get into the criminology path.
And yeah, there’s no minor because it’s capped.

Do you really need me to explain why a BA in psych is useless?

Sure I think it’s a lot of fun, but I like to deter people from doing psych because it won’t really help you in future prospects unless you plan on going to grad school for psych, which isn’t the plan for many psych majors.

^ i was just teasin ya. but now that u posted that im sure OP appreciates it!

in scurred. if i dont get into med school, i really REALLY dont want to go to grad school for psych. i guess an MPH program in epi wouldnt be too bad, but it just wont be the same as med school :(

^ do you plan on applying soon/have you already applied?
