For a first year Stamps’ school Art & Design student, would you recommend picking a North Campus dorm (Baits or Bursley) as your preference for dorm? Also, given a choice between Baits and Bursley, is one more desirable than the other and why? Or does proximity/location not matter so much, since not all classes will be at Stamps anyways for first years? For a main campus dorm, is there a dorm that might be convenient for a North Campus major, or does that not matter since a bus will have to be taken either way? Also worrying about the lack of AC… Thanks for any advice!
I went to Michigan many years ago so my advice not be relevant anymore but I think you will want to be in a dorm on main campus. North campus tends to be all engineering students and it is separate from most of the social activities at the school.
Thank you!
You don’t get to select your dorm. You are placed. But, as a practical matter, if you want North Campus you’ll likely get it because almost every freshman wants central campus (it’s not called main campus).
Thanks! I know you can’t pick your dorm, but you can supposedly note your preferences. Ultimately, you get what you get, I assume, without any choice.
Yes, you can cite preferences. I don’t know anyone who has ever gotten their location preferences UNLESS they request North Campus.
So north is NOT just engineering but all the engineering classes are there in their own high tech building per major.
There are nursing, medical, engineering, theater and dance, art, school of information students etc all on North. There was supposed to be brand new high rise built by now but the pandemic delayed those plans.
It’s very quiet . My son saw deer in the morning on the way to classes. It’s a different vibe from Central. It doesn’t make it worse. My comparison is central is like living in a city and North more like the suburbs. Both have great restaurants within walking distance.
If you like quiet. North it is.
My kids live in a major city, Chicago. They take busses and trains to school. Each way is around 40 minutes. So the 10 minutes it takes to go from North to central just isn’t a big deal.
Many students also live in Apartments on central but have classes on North. Proving… It’s just not a big deal.
If you have questions pm me or just ask.
is there a way to avoid being put in north campus?
I’m not familiar with STAMPS coursework, specifically freshman coursework, but if you’re required or elect to take any Liberal Arts courses, such as humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, etc., then those lcourses will be likely held on Central Campus. My D18 in LSA had zero courses on North Campus.
Personally, I’d try to get Central Campus housing as a 1st year. Maybe if you request AC, you’ll get a dorm on The Hill or Central Campus, since I don’t believe any of the North Campus dorms or Mary Markley have AC.
Only if you have a legitimate medical reason with medical documentation.
You can have them put in
To get on central with medical reasons but really can’t think of any since North I think is closer to the hospital. You can have air conditioner put in anywhere I believe.
If you join a residential community on central like WISE as an example and for some religious reasons it would apply. If this doesn’t make sense to you then it doesn’t apply… Lol. Also need proof.
This debate goes on yearly but the students seem to be happy where they land. You can join a Co-op housing over a dorm. They are dorm like for sure but not just freshman and you don’t have to live in a dorm at all. Just get an apartment as a Freshman. I wouldn’t suggest this but you can.
my daughter grew up kosher but not sure where that would put her lol. I think there is a super religious dorm in north campus which she would not want
Pm me.
Yes, but I was referring to the entire building having AC, not just a room. Only the newer buildings or remodeled buildings have AC. However, I have no memory of the hpusing form(s) and they probably changed them anyway.
You can apply for a living community located on central campus.
