Northeastern EA Deferred Student Support Group

Hey guys! Like many of you, I was deferred from Northeastern. I thought I would make this group to pass the time until RD is released. For those of you who don’t know, I got this clairvoyant Predict the Future Pen for Christmas to use for predicting college acceptances as a joke, but after inquiring about the Northeastern EA decision release date, the pen ended up becoming a very reliable source.

I feel it is only right to make my pen the president of this group for its valiant effort and the fact that my pen correctly predicted the early action decision date! The pen was quite disappointed to hear that I was deferred, but the pen told me that it is a “No Brainer” that there is still lots of hope for us deferred applicants. A quick update on the pen: I dropped the pen off at the airport on Friday for its flight to the Bahamas. The pen should be home in the middle or end of February to start helping us out. I will be taking over as president until it comes back.

The goal of this thread is to take off some of the anxiety of the wait until RD. You can talk about anything, whether it be looking for advice from fellow deferred applicants, figuring out what date NEU may release decisions, talking about other colleges, etc., as long as everyone is having fun and joking around.

I know if I asked my pen right now, “Will we all have a good time in this thread and all end up at a college that fits us perfectly if it is not Northeastern?” that my pen would respond "Without a doubt."I still dare to live by the pen, do you?

aw i’m so glad you made this thread! i’m already getting nervous with anticipation about RD; i’m really hoping things work out better for us this time around.

Good to have this thread - seems to be a huge number of deferrals from EA application pool this year. Don’t really like the game being played by NU admissions. Trying to weed out those serious about NU from those who had NU as a safety or further down their list - get them to reject NU without having to offer them a place and decrease their yield.
Well we will see - could back fire and NU loses out on a lot of very talented students.

My D had NU in her top 3 and her initial response to the deferral was sit down a write a letter of continued interest - but she did not finish it and now has merit $$ offers from other colleges coming in. Someone wrote on a thread here that you should Love the colleges that Love you!! I think that is wise advice - NU not fairing too well right now.

Super dodgy from northeastern. Schools like Tulane and Tufts do the fact same thing. The price we pay for the usnewsworldreport

exact^ not fact

OMG @ugradbiz I love you and your pen! My son was accepted, but I might just have to visit here now and again to see what the pen is up to. Good luck to everyone!

I was deferred and I’m so so nervous because NEU is my top school!

I was deferred as well and a bit surprised at that. Oh well, I suppose that’s just the admissions game we all play. I know in the deferral letter they specify that decisions will be released on April 1st at the latest, but does anyone know if they tend to be even earlier than that? Or if it maybe operates on some sort of rolling, merit based decision cycle?

For those deferred was this your “backup” to a reach ED or your dream school. I submitted ED2 after a “failed” super reach and I am anxiously awaiting. This was my favorite all along but had to do the “reach” because - just because.

I am just trying to understand/crunch the numbers and hopefully one of you out here can help me. In the deferral letter it made mention of there being over 62,000 overall applications for admissions this year. What I am wondering is how many were accepted ED1 and then how many to expect ED2? That will help me figure out just how many spots are potentially still open for the RD folks, including those deferred who are not part of the RD group.
Thanks

@barryfan ED only started a couple of years ago and ED II is new this year. I remember reading somewhere that there were about 2000 ED applicants last year. They have not published separate acceptance rates.

I had not heard the 62,000 application total before. That would be a 15% increase from last year. Also this past fall Northeastern was 300 freshmen overenrolled which created a crunch for the housing office. I am pretty sure that they will use a conservative approach to acceptances to prevent a repeat of that situation.

Me too! I got rejected from Tufts and decided to apply EDII to Northeastern. I’m really hoping I get in because it’s by far my top choice.

I got deferred as well. Based on my stats/Northeastern’s usual stats, I was a little surprised that I wasn’t accepted. Waiting for April is going to be so difficult :frowning:

don’t worry, I know a lot of very smart people (smarter than me) who got deferred EA to Northeastern. They probably just got a lot more applications this year, but I’m sure you’ll get in somewhere at least as good.

can i still get a scholarship after being deferred?

For those deferred, have you heard back after mid year grades were sent? Would we only hear end of March with RD pool?

@genuine77 I think we are in the waiting game until the RD decision date.

Did anyone check their email for decisions announcements recently?

@apdns19 thanks.

Some decisions went out last week (to RD applicants even) and they were for honors. Working their way through the entire remaining applicant pool…
