My daughter was accepted to Northeastern EA. Since then, we have received a ton of stuff from them: postcards, letters, a small box of Valentine’s candy, a car sticker, and yesterday a personalized poster. And, before she applied we got a mountain of stuff from them…postcards and letters galore telling her to apply. It’s really quite mind boggling the effort and money they put into their marketing campaign.
My daughter (who still hasn’t made a decision yet) had this to say after getting yesterday’s poster, “How many trees are they going to kill on my behalf?”
It really makes me wonder how much of our tuition payments will go toward marketing to prospective students. How much is too much and at what point does over-zealous marketing start to turn off prospective enrollees?
Even worse, my son was accepted EA and we have already made his enrollment deposit. He is still getting all those mailings! At the very least, the university should not send anything to students who have committed to the school.
@DoingOurBest and @bethanylm291 - I am SO glad you both noticed that and commented! Like you we get a lot of mailings from schools but Northeastern is in overdrive/overkill! Not only that the amount of money they must spend on some of their fancy mailings - like the one that is a hologram that we got 3 times!!! Enough - save some trees but hey, how about saving me some $money$ and instead of sending all those out plow some of those savings into more FA and merit for the students!!
Northeastern is not some little unknown and unloved school. Seems to me like someone in their admissions and or marketing department is trying to prove that they need a job by all these multiple meaningless mailings! Gross
From a student of the university - Northeastern is very excessive on marketing but it is really important for the school to attract a certain student body. The school is on the up and up since I arrived, and I think heavy marketing and EA admittance shave been really critical to that. The tuition you pay at NU is similar to most private schools in the area, but you get added value of not just professors but full time coop staff that hold your hand through the process of finding job placements. I think this value is much more valuable of a decision criteria than marketing mailings. That being said, I do think they could be a little more efficient and creative, quality over quantity.
