At Northeastern, you take 16 credits (four 4-credit classes) a semester, plus any labs or other required small 1 or 2 credit additions. I know the idea of credits may differ between universities a little, but I’m not sure taking only three classes a semester is a good idea if you want to look competitive. Here four is the norm, but at a lot of other schools people take five or even sometimes six 3-credit courses- so I’d have doubts about taking only three.

4 credits a class? that seems like a lot, but im in california so maybe our schools use different credit scales. are the classes at northeastern really hard? im going to be a science major if that makes a difference. is there anything about northeastern that you don’t like? also im a vegetarian, is there a lot of veg. options at northeastern or in boston (not just veggies, but more like tofu)?

Has anyone heard anything about the housing for Fall 2011 transfers?

Is anyone else still waiting for a financial aid package or am I the only one? Lol.

I still haven’t heard from the housing.

I am pretty disappointed with how long everything takes for NU to send to their prospective students… if a person is about to pay $50,000+ to attend the University, one would think it wouldn’t be so difficult to find out when financial aid comes in, when housing comes in, or to make a better system of organization with the main application process. Everything has seemed very unorganized from the beginning, and when you do call to ask about housing, or FA, they just tell you to keep waiting it should be coming soon…

Still no word on housing from anyone?

Just emailed them the other day and got the response:

“The transfer housing placement process will begin in July and be distributed to students via e-mail in late July”

So…if that’s what they call “soon” then I guess we’ll be hearing soon about housing.

They do transfers after they do every single one of the current students, and they are having delays and problems with that- so it makes sense that transfers will take a while.

And I hate to break it to you, but every single school has issue with administration and not hearing back and long wait times. None of my friends at other schools have it any better.

So we don’t find out housing assignments and roommates until late July.

Does anyone know move in day for transfers?

hey guy,
i saw the tuition fee for each term on my fall bill is $19,920. does anyone know how many credits that this amount makes up? is it 12 credits or 18 credits that make up this amount? I haven’t registered for the fall classes. So, i have no idea how many credits i’m gonna take and they already billed me the tuition fee for the fall 2011…lol

It is 16 credits, plus any other 1 or 2 credit courses that are required for you (such as labs, enhancing honors, etc). Since you can only take four 4 credit classes here, everyone pays the same- not per credit hour. If you try to take a fifth 4 credit class, you get hit with an overcredit charge of almost five thousand dollars.

Hi,
so basically, you are required to take 16 to 18 credits per semester?
Can I just take 12 credits to be considered as a full time student?

I just saw that my ‘anticipated housing’ cost is $3,825, I compared this to the listed rates on NEU’s website and noticed that upperclassmen housing standard double bedrooms are the only option that matches that price. Does this mean that I am in that housing?

You can take 12 to be full-time, but why would you? You’ll just have to stay here longer. Besides to be honest having a schedule with only three classes is pretty boring, unless you are also doing your own internship or part-time job. And grad schools won’t be all that impressed by it if you do it often.

Probably just means they think you’ll be in housing, so they are charging you for it. If they email you and say you aren’t, then I’m sure it’s not like they’ll keep the money or anything.

Hey neuchimie, I’m thinking of taking an online course this fall while on co-op (which I think means I’ll pay the ~$5,000? I don’t know if I can get 1/4 of my Dean’s scholarship applied to it). And then I figured I’d take 12 credits worth of classes in a later semester-- under the impression that I’d be paying the ~5,000 less for that semester. Is that how it works?

If it is an overload (your fifth class) then you have to pay the 5 grand, no scholarship. If it’s just your fourth class (like I’m doing) then its just like normal and its part of the scholarship and everything.

I’m not 100% sure about what happens when you take 12 credits. I was always told that you get the full tuition amount so long as you are full time and not overloading (so 12 to 20), and if you drop below full-time then you lose the scholarship. I had a friend that took 12 credits in the spring however, and her scholarship was fine. She swears she paid less than the normal amount, but she’s not exactly the most organized or financially responsible person I know so I’m not sure if she knows what the full amount is.

I would email financial aid (about the scholarship) and your academic advisor (from the college) about it. They were pretty helpful with me when I asked about the fees involved with taking a grad class. It’s better to find out now than to risk paying too much.

But am I absolutely certain that overloading is not covered by the scholarship at all.

Thanks for the info Wasn’t sure if you had any experience with it. It would actually be my only class (not my fourth or fifth) since I’m on full-time co-op. I’ll definitely be talking to my advisors about it if I do get into the class.

Oh true. I know you can do a class on co-op, but you have to apply to do it. You need the grades (not sure what the cutoff is) to convince your academic advisor that you can “handle” it. There is a form to fill out in the CAS office.

Funny thing-- I thought I’d have to fill out a form, so I e-mailed my academic advisor last week. She e-mailed me the form, then I read it and it said that it’s only to be filled out if taking two or more courses while on co-op. I pointed that out to her, and she just said, “Oh, I never noticed that! Guess you don’t have to fill it out!” Oh Northeastern.

Have any new transfer students here received the bill for the fall 2011?
my bill is due in august and I wonder do I have to pay before the due day since i haven’t registered for any classes? because my orientation day is not until September therefore i will not be able to register for classes till that day. I would like to know if I could wait until my orientation to register for my classes 1st then pay the bill after.
