Anyone have a guestimate about when ED2 will release decisions? It says March 1 on the website but I heard February 15th. Is there a history to draw upon?
Historically it’s been a week after early action but that’s already passed.
People have been told by the school that it will be “by the 15th” and the last day to switch to RD is the 13th. So the 15th makes sense
Thank you
Yes, my daughter got it and was deferred EA
My daughter felt like she was gaslighted. I wonder if they even got to her application among the almost 100k. Hoping she gets admitted for rd
The whole admissions process is mind boggling. I’ve given up on predicting outcomes. Hoping for the best but preparing for the worst!
I am seeing the same growth in D23 and how she looks at schools differently as she processes all the information she gets. Good point.
Should Deferred students upload mid year grades through the portal?
I thought the report should come from your school counselor directly.
Venting is important. The admissions process is so subjective and it is really impossible to understand why one student got admitted and another denied. Especially at the ultra competitive institutions where the number of applications has gone through the roof! Often it appears that there is little logic, rhyme or reason to the decisions. I try to explain to my kids that it is so dependent on who read your app at that particular moment based on their day, their biases, etc. I am holding out hope that it will all make sense in the end… and that everyone eventually ends up at a good fit school! Good luck to your applicant!
I’m glad it worked out for him but if he applied ED it’s not an apples to apples comparison. My D did not apply ED anywhere due to financial constraints and had no choice but to write lots of essays for EA/RD.
Well said! With more or less similar applications, similar GPAs, SATs, ECs, it ends up being a lottery! You may get it, you may not! So dependent on the person, their biases like you rightly said. All is well that ends well I guess!
I would never compare my kid’s admission because there is no denying ED gave him an advantage. We did not think we would be able to until they offered the pre-read. That was mid October.
There was still no guarantee that he would be admitted to the Boston campus or at all. We went with the mindset that the majority of students applying were strong candidates. He ended up applying to seven schools for the November 1 deadline. He wrote quite a few essays.
Northeastern was unequivocally his first choice and had been since 8th grade when he tagged along to a college fair with his older brother. He knew he had to be open minded and have some safety schools and even other reach schools, but I think writing “why this school?” Essays for schools that were a distant second or third choice for him felt forced.
Boston Globe had an article about the NEU Oakland and The Mills college merger. If you can read it attached below:
Can you summarize it? I’m unable to access the article.
Summary (my best attempt):
Mills college was a liberal west coast women college where everyone including LGBTQ could express freely etc.
NEU instead of being a merger looks more like a corporate acquisition.
So original Mills college enrollees feel like they got steamrolled a bit (liberal arts classes no longer offered as Mills college had lost accreditation and transfer to equivalent NEU courses was not seamless)
Faculty became NEU employees and got first pay boosts in 10 years as NEU brought more funds
Campus has seen improvements due to new money
NEU is honoring total COA of $49000 for Mills students vs $81k+ COA for NEU
About 500 first-year Northeastern students enrolled on the Oakland campus last fall. About half already have relocated to the main Boston campus as part of a program called N.U.in, which sends hundreds of students to other Northeastern campuses for their first semester with the understanding they will come to Boston in the spring “more intellectually curious and ready to jump into the next adventure,” according to the university’s website. Students accepted into that program can choose from a list of available campus locations on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The rest of the Northeastern students currently in Oakland are participating in a similar, year-long program called NU Bound, which sends students to locations other than Boston for two semesters.
The two programs include students who may not have chosen Oakland as their first choice but enrolled to relocate to Boston after a semester or two. This dynamic frustrates some Mills students who realize that some of the Northeastern students would rather be elsewhere.
Northeastern said it plans to grow enrollment at the Oakland campus and extend its signature co-op program to students there down the road.
Most of Boston Globe reader comments are pointing out or criticizing “the entitlement mentality of students.”
Is my son the only one on here who was offered Northeastern Oakland and is kind of intrigued? He would be in the joint comp sci/ business major. We are thinking about going out to see it!
An earlier NEU article said 20% of student applicants e pressed interest in Oakland. Fall 2023 would be the first regular enrolled students at NU Oakland and some ED parents said the school said they are targeting a class of 250-300 students. My sense is over 4 years that would be the size of a small LAC which Mills essentially was.
It could be a great program for the right students, and for CS/Business it’s in great location!
Thanks. I have concerns about the newness of the program but my son agrees with you that the location could be great. He learns best in small classes and is mostly focused on the coops/ professional opportunities.
In case anyone is interested, at an online info session, they said that they had accepted 1,945 kids to Oakland in the ED/ EA rounds. Average GPA of accepted students is 3.8-4.1 and average scores are 32-34/ 1420-1510. Obviously, they expect a much lower yield for Oakland, which makes sense.
Interesting stats and thanks for sharing. You never hear much about these optional NU programs.
I imagine they also shared what majors they are offering there?
The program will grow over time. Sounds like NU is investing money and time into the program. I am sure it will have its bumps along the way, but it could be interesting. Plus ther’ll be NUin and global scholars/NUBOund students there, so you’ll get the flavor of NU’s culture of coming and going pretty quickly.
It is understandable the current Mills Students are upset with the merger bc this NU program is not what they signed up for… but otherwise, their campus was closing.
