Northeastern VS Boston University

I agree with applejack. I jogged from BU to NEU in under 10 minutes. Anyways, BU's my first choice. NEU's my second.

yeah, the "centrally located" doesn't mean much. NU is more "central" by about 5 minutes. Still, I like the area around NU (prudential, Newbury, the Fens) more than the area around BU. I applied to both with BU as my first choice, until I spent some time at Northeastern. After I'd seen the campuses, met students, and gotten a feel for both atmospheres, I decided to come to NU.

Different for everyone though... some people love BU campus and not NU. You really just have to visit and see for yourself.

according to collegeboard, NEU's acceptance rate is like 15% lower than BU. So why is BU considered to have higher standards?

Because in the past NU had much lower standards than BU. As of today, the only real difference between the schools are the acceptance rate and co-op program.

me being an international student, i know for a fact BU is much more recognized. but i dunno i've been researching and all and NEU seems more attractive and better overall, but i need to think abt which uni international firms would rather hire from you know?

Honestly, even though BU has more fame, NU is about the same as BU in terms of employability because of its Co-Op program. The BU student will have the name on his resume while the NU student will have the work experiences so it all evens out.

hmm good point jai...

Even though Northeastern just broke the top 100 for best undergraduate business schools by the U.S. News and World Report, you are failing to realize that BU is top 30 ranking. And has been for a while. Even though Northeatern has a good COOP, the COOP is nothing without great foundation/curriculum!

And NEU students, in particular, live by US News ;)

Businessweek ranked NEU 34, BU is 42.

Just sayin'...

First things first, BU is ranked 57th in the US News and World Report...Not in the top 30. Second, that particular ranking [and all rankings, really] is biased against schools with non-traditional methods [like a co-op program]. US N+W Report doesn't take into account, when ranking schools for faculty-student ratio, avg. class size and 6 year graduation rate that around half of Northeastern's students are not in class at a given time; they're on co-op. In addition peer assessment is a large portion of the ranking as well; this speaks to a schools reputation. This works against a school, like NEU, that was historically bad and is now good. It takes a while for the school's reputation to catch up with how good it actually is, it's a delayed reaction. So with all of that said, take the US News and World Report rankings with a grain of sand.

On edit: Not to brag [okay, well maybe a little]...But our co-op program isn't 'good', it's the best :).

Oops, I didn't realize you were talking only about B-schools. That said, our B-school is rated 26th by Business Week, according to the latest numbers I've seen.

Few things. First off, in the business world, Business Week's list is the "official" ranking list, not US News. Second, Northeastern's B-school dropped from 26 to 34 this year (the rankings just came out about a week ago). And finally, Northeastern's co-op program was ranked number 1 the only time co-op was ranked (in 03 or 04... something like that). Northeastern is a good school, but while it constantly boasts that it has the best co-op program, that stat is getting out of date. I'd still pick Northeastern over BU though.

I have read some opinions on the two schools .are there any current students, or those deciding between the schools that can offer some more pros and cons on both?D got accepted to both, and is looking at pre med or poss phys therapy.Any input PLEASE!!!

Did you get accepted into NEU's PT or health science ?

she did not apply for p.t because she wants pre med track more[as of now],she got into bouve health sciences, but they said she can change her mind cuz classes are pretty much the same first year'

NU All the way!!! I'm a business student here. The courses are amazing and I LOVE my professors. They actually will remember you for semesters and year after which is incredibly surprising to me. Also, all my business courses have been 30-40 people and few under 30 which for freshmen and sophomore year is awesome. Our intro to business course is taken by all CBA students and every week your group in the class works on a part of your business plan which you present about every week. Each week a TJX Executive comes in and speaks about their dep't (IT, Marketing, Finance, etc.) and you get to ask them questions about their dep't to help as you make the business plan that you are role playing as selling to TJX. At the end of the semeser 4 teams from all the classes get to present to CBA students and TJX Executives.

Also, coop is clearly a big thing. Especially in business networking is key. So the fact that I can graduate with 3 six month work experiences and know all those contacts at different companies is amazing. Also, the business coops are really well paid and they are very hands on so its incredibly good to see how to apply the theories you are learning in the classes.

NEU also has a much nicer campus than BU. We have a freshmen quad, krentzmen quad, West village quad, centennial common, etc. its very nice that everything is centrally located together rather than just down the sidewalk. Also, we have 4-5 t stops on campus. The Northeastern, MFA, Symphony stops on the green line and the Ruggles and Mass Ave stops on the Orange line. We also have the #39 and#1 buses on campus so it helps that I can just hop on the #1 and get to harvard square via that or via green line to red line.

I hope that helped :-)

collegenutx2,
my daughter sounds a little like yours. she is also thinking about a pre-med track and got into Bouve.
She has chosen NU over BU and a few others, mostly because of the co-op , campus, size of school and flexibility within Bouve , in case she does change her mind.
NU has been her first choice since day one of the beginning of the process.

lje62,
Is your daughter going to sign up for the llc dorms?Where are you from, it sounds like these girls have the same path in mind , maybe they can email each other since they will most likely be in a lot of the same classes

Hi, i want to ask about the reputation of NEU in America? and some friends told me that its education quality is not very high, is it true? I am now transferring to universities in US, but some have not been decided yet.

It depends on what you mean by “education quality”. If you compare Northeastern to say Harvard and MIT, then the “quality” is not as good. Those super-endowed schools have the resources to provide opportunities that few other schools can afford. If you are comparing Northeastern to Boston University, NYU, George Washington U. etc. then the quality is comparable.
