<p>I'm a high school senior currently living in Idaho and I'm highly interested in majoring in graphic design. It's really been my dream job for as long as I can remember. There a a few problems with this though, first is that my parents aren't very supportive of me going to college. Which sadly brings me to my second problem... they won't help pay for tuition. I'm on my own there. And third, I'd really like to stay fairly close to home. I'd prefer to stay in the northwest region preferably in Washington, Idaho, maybe Montana, and possibly Oregon but I'll take a look at any suggestions, even out of that range. Also I love the Seattle area, living and working there is my ultimate goal</p>
<p>My GPA is alright, I've maintained a 3.25 all the way through high school and in my last year I'm really going to be pushing to get it up to 3.5. After all, I'm going to need all the scholarships I can get. </p>
<p>The school I've been most interested in is the Northwest College of Arts. Not Pacific Northwest. Just northwest.</p>
<p>So Any recommendations or advice you can give me on this would be great, thanks to anyone that read this or gave it some thought.</p>
<p>have to be honest, I did not know where Idaho is in my head ( I am an immigrant living NY) I must have drove through because I left on the bus Olympia Washington, remember stopping at Wyoming middle of the night. wow! Idaho!

there are rather nice state U with graphic design BFA NASAD accredited dirt cheap! Northeast, mid-Atlantic folks, you can not believe these price! merit award! living options! no mandatory meal plans!

<p>OP I don’t know why your folks won’t send you to college I mean, what do they want you to do?
It is great you got nice state schools. Are you near by? have you gone to see it? Why don’t you start there, you’d take foundation art courses and gen ed until you get to choose major for junior year. if you do well, you win money. Without parents helping I don’t think stand alone art schools are not the realistic option.</p>
<p>I’m familiar with both areas. I notice that the tuition alone at Poulsbo is the same as estimated tuition & room at Moscow. How are you planning on paying for this if your parents aren’t supportive (I had somewhat the same situation)? Personally, I haven’t had a chance to look at the Poulsbo school’s site that much yet but I’m thinking that it’s going to be pretty expensive to go to a school that’s relatively unknown. </p>

<p>If money is an issue, Moscow might be your better bet or the school in Boise. You may stand to get grants more easily but also this will be much less expensive and unless the Poulsbo school has some really stellar instructors, I’m not sure that the U of I or Boise wouldn’t be just as good and more affordable. If money is an issue also stay in-state. </p>
<p>You’ll save a ton and unless you’re going to make a big leap outside of the Pacific NW I don’t think there’s all that much difference between the different school excepting perhaps U of W but maybe not even that. The art schools around Seattle area aren’t all that much to write home about considering how expensive they are also in my opinion. But I’ve been out of the area for some time also.</p>
<p>Have you looked into Evergreen? Although that out of state tuition is so much higher.</p>
<p>Okay, did some research on the Poulsbo school. Sounds not so good, sounds like they do a great job of selling the place, the director may tour area hs’s selling his operation, is that how you heard about them?</p>
<p>The responses of people who have attended the school raise a lot of red flags for me as a parent. And the credits are transferable so your money flies out the window. Go to in-state Boise or Moscow, work like a dog, absorb all you can and then move to Seattle or transfer to U of W. It sounds like the art school is a rip-off judging from what I read and this is the same advice I’d give my own kid.</p>

some art-y folks strongly recomended U of W Seattle but when I tried their site just before I posted, art major has no link running. (music and drama works, sort of) weired, no? It was enuff to turn me off.</p>
<p>That’s exactly how it happened actually. They sent a rep to our school and did a great job making it sound amazing. Guess some things are just to good to be true.</p>
<p>Well my brother is actually graduating from UofI this year, although he just went for the partying. Still at least it’s a legitimate school. The only reason I didn’t consider it before is because I never saw the major that you showed me. I thought it was just the virtual technology one. I’ve gone there once before and my brother showed me around, they have an amazing campus. I’d really enjoy going there.</p>
<p>My parents don’t want me to go to school because they think of college as a huge waste of time. They’d prefer I go into the military. Yes, I have a strange family.</p>
<p>Really I’m not sure how I’m going to pay for it yet. Combination of loans, scholarships, and hard work. I’ll start looking into that once I choose a school.</p>

Prove them wrong with super hi GPA, get part time job and bring dad nifty socks or tie, mom flower or cake (I perfer this) pull in aunt uncle neigbors anyone who can take side for you. doesn’t matter they can’t help $ just enough people need telling how smart you are and college will totally do good for you.

<p>Not really actually. They were just as against my brother going as they are for me. But my family is pretty stubborn and they know that if I want to go, I’m going to find a way so it’s not like they’re actively trying to stop me. They just say those little comments ever now and then that make sure I know I don’t need to go.</p>
<p>Why don’t you contact admissions at U of I as soon as school starts and talk to them about your situation, see what your options might be. Get started early as you need to get as many grants, etc. as possible. Do go, the military is not a good option right now, you could really get stuck and I’ve known too many family and friends who are stop-lossed, can’t get out, the benefits aren’t all that good anymore and it’s going to be tough to go to school with a case of Post Traumatic Stress. Really, unless you want to do it, don’t. It’s rough very rough and only for those who really want it.</p>
