CONGRATULATIONS to those accepted.

To those rejected, I’m so sorry. But you will find yourself at the PERFECT fit. There are so many great colleges and so much happiness to be found. Make sure you have applied to a variety of schools. Remember you are FANTASTIC. There are just not enough spots for all the wonderful kids out there. The acceptance ball bounces funny. But if you apply to enough schools, you’ll get many great offers.

I have 2 kids in college (class of 2018 and 2020) and 1 who’s graduated from college (class of 2016). So between them and all there friends I’ve seen a lot. I am by NO MEANS an expert at anything! But I have heard a lot through the years.

For those DEFERRED … different schools defer differently. From what I remember in the past Northwestern defers very few kids (unless they’ve changed their system this year). I remember 4 years ago, my daughter’s friend was deferred. She got a letter stating that she was 1 of 80 kids deferred and they’d be accepting 50% of them and it depended on their grades from first semester senior year. So study hard now!!!

I found this article which backs this up “It’s important to keep in mind that the rate of deferrals is not the same at every school. Northwestern University only started deferring applicants a few years ago, and only does so for 1-2 percent of the applicants, and Vanderbilt only defers applicants under very special circumstances. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Georgetown University defers everyone who isn’t accepted early, so there are no denials in the early round.” https://www.huffingtonpost.com/kat-cohen/the-truth-about-getting-d_b_2395749.html

I hope this helps some of you.

@ManuPotturi no, they didn’t specify. I just added it because why not find fellow bio majors? Congrats on your acceptance!!

Applied to School of Communication, got accepted! 32 ACT, 3.93 GPA. I’ll be majoring in Theatre Performance.

Appreciate some of the encouragement for those deferred but most of the statistics cited are almost a decade old. If this message board is representative than NU clearly deferred more than 80 students this year. Will be interesting to get information that is accurate and updated.

To be fair, l bet a majority of deferred applicants went on college confidential to see what was going on. Also, my college counselor told me that they do not like to defer applicants and that there is a small pool of those who got deferred.

@Marlins3740 I agree. I found a thread from about 10 years ago (near the time of the most recent stats) where a lot of people claimed to be deferred and thought there was an increase in the number of people who were deferred, when in reality there are just a lot of people checking on here to see what being deferred means for them. I think anybody who maintained or improved their grades the first semester of this year will probably get in.

Stats on this board as of 12/15 mid day 21 accepted 22 deferred 14 rejected but I agree with trainguy17 this board is not a random / valid sample.

@nu2020 do you have any idea about how many are deferred/accepted after being deferred?

accepted!!! im absolutely thrilled! i kept saying i would be rejected, but my friends kept saying i wouldn’t be haha. i guess they were right~~ does anyone know if they withdraw acceptances due to second semester grade drops?

Deferred with a 4.0 and a 33. Ive lived in Evanston my whole life and haven’t missed a home football or basketball game since I was six. Does anyone know of things I can do to boost my chances beyond the classic deferral letter, finish 2nd semester strong, counselor call to admissions office, or things that are kind of obvious? I’m pretty desperate and I’m even thinking about signing up for a tour every saturday till the end of march. I know that sounds a bit excessive but I really don’t know how to put the connection I have with nu into words.

Same one as the one previously posted

@Etownwildcat - Your counselor is going to be your best bet starting place. If you live in Evanston they know NU admissions really well. Don’t do anything without talking to them first. However, if your why NU essay was about watching the sports games etc. I would consider doing another version of the why NU in your deferral letter. Talk about something you studied this semester or did in a club or read outside of class that really interested you and connect it to a class/feild of study/program at NU or something you hope to engage in at NU. Also if you did great in a class this semester (or have a strong EC) consider adding another recommendation letter. If you know your principal, beg them to pick up the phone and call NU on your behalf. Get your parents involved in contacting the high school to advocate on your behalf.
Second, you can still love NU even if you go somewhere else. If you’ve lived in Evanston your whole life, consider that they may be doing you a favor by offering you the opportunity to live somewhere else and experience a different part of the country. Seriously - college is such a great time for that. You are a great candidate - please use the next few weeks to work on your college list and applications.
Best of luck.

See you all again in late March!

Accepted! 34 ACT, 4.245 UW GPA, 4.729 weighted
