Northwestern HPME Part 1

there's a request card available from their website somewhere...you fill that out, then they make a cut. if you make the cut they send you an app...which is due by jan 1.

Oh that card? So then that was due awhile ago before I even got the application. Why would they list it again on the orange sheet?

I'm an applicant to both the HPME program and the university itself, and I've had some problems with the formatting of the "awards" section of both the HPME online application and the regular online application: when I print preview the applications, my awards show as one large paragraph instead of the list that I made.
Is anyone else having this problem with the HPME application?

Since the window they give you isn't a MS word window, and is instead a simple text window, I've made my awards list with the "~" sign instead of a bullet mark:
~award one
~award two
~etc

but when I print preview, the neat list that i make goes away.

Any suggestions guys?

Ok, I got an auto-reply message from Northwestern w/ a list of Q and A's and it says that the text-box display is what they see, rather than the pdf print preview display. So my problem isn't a problem.

Just thought I'd let you guys know in case anyone else is having trouble w/ this same thing. I just submitted my HPME app and it feels good to get it off my mind. Yay!

Is it okay to mail the med app in a different envelope from the one they gave you? I think I messed something up but its already sealed.

did you guys explain your activity along w/ your list of extra-curriculars? i was thinking about just sending a resume, but descriptions usually help right?

Yeah, that's what I did, sakuragirl. And just to double-check, we're supposed to send in an additional list of activities along with that other sheet with the blanks for activities and awards they provide, correct?

i didn't know we're supposed to send in an additional sheet (it seems like there aren't much else to add b/c they already ask for a lot of different things). i was wondering...can we retype the sheet they gave us? the blank are really small, so wouldn't it help the reader too if we retyped it?

So you're not submitting the original sheet at all? You're just going to type it up and submit the new, cleaner one?

I agree with the blanks about being too small. When I tried writing in it, it became very difficult to read (this is coming from someone who can write extraordinarily small and neat at the same time). I was going to send in a resume also because I figured they could refer to that instead, but maybe it would be better to turn in a sheet formatted the same way?

see, i still don't know if i should do that or follow their guideline b/c the blanks maybe be limited for a reason. i don't want them to be mad if i type say 3 sentences rather than the couple of words they allow in the "description blank". i remember Northwestern 50-word short answer~_~ somehow i feel like brevity is what they want.

I just wrote in whatever they wanted in the actual application...and i also sent in a resume with all of my ec's and 2-3 bullets underneath each just describing each one briefly....i think sakuragirl is right, keep it short and sweet...they've got like 900 of these to read.......

Yeah, I just sent in both.

how long were you guys' essay? the limit is 1000 words, but my essay is only about 850 and i'm slightly worried.

I had the opposite problem sakuragirl...mine was 1350 and the online app cuts it off automatically at 1000 so i got it to exactly 1000

but I think if you're in the 800-1000 word range that's good! usually it's the 80-120% rule but for this I don't think they let you go over

does anyone know if the HPME people see what the reg. Northwestern adcoms see? cuz the HPME app only asks for the English teacher rec--but will they see the other rec that I sent in for Northwestern?

if they don't, what do you all know about whether it's a good idea to send in extra materials? The rec I got for Northwestern itself is really good, and I'd like the HPME people to see it as well

thanks--and Happy New Year's everyone. (1 more college essay to do before the end of tomorrow...ugh)

hm, interesting all my Northwestern and HPME essays, including the short answers, were the exact maximum for word count (500, 300, 50, 50, 1000)

billybobbyk, I think it's a good idea to send in one or two extra recs, like the one for northwestern itself. errr I should have done so myself, but...yeah didn't want to call my teacher over break.

lol, when I told my teacher how many schools I was applying to he handed me a stack of the recs he wrote for me and said "mail 'em yourself"...so i still have a couple lying around. I'll prob. send it to the HPME people.

Happy New Year everyone!

i didn't send in any extra recs. i think the HPME ppl will only see your HPME application b/c the sending address is different from NW undergrad.

might be early to ask this. but when do we hear back?

I think the interviews (if you are one of the 150 or so people to receive an interview) is mid to late February, so you should hear back by early February.
