ookk, so i just got the hpme app here, and now I find that a teacher rec needs to be received by them on Jan 1. I can barely make the postmark date (school is on break and resumes on the 4th). Is anyone else in trouble with the deadline, and what are you going to do about it?

do you know the teacher's e-mail adress? Maybe you can e-mail the teacher and ask him/her to write a letter. If you do not know it, maybe you have the phone number of your college counceller and he knows the phone number of your teacher?

The teacher's already written a rec for my unis...it's, yes, contacting people that's the problem. I'm waiting for a reply from my counselor as I write this.

pales does HPME want my teacher to write a personalized rec to the HPME program on me going into medicine? Man, that makes things even worse...(thank you buckwald for your swift reply)

my teacher letters for my top 3 programs: NU, GW, Brown all specifically adressed them. The others i just did about a program and didn't personalize it. I would.

aiya, cripes. she's really too busy, and this is on too short notice for me even to ask. Maybe it'll be ok....if they so specifically want an English teacher, they're probably most concerned with my English ability, not about me being suited to pursue medicine. Extra-good essay needed from me then.

hey buckwald,
you said that it would be ok as long as your SATIIs aren't below 650. What about if I got a 600 in chem and 750, 770 on writing and mathIIC? Am I already out of the running? eek this is freaking me out...

Hey ace888,

The 600 chem SAT II score will definitely hurt you, but you are not out of the running based on one bad score. You other SAT IIs are right on target. If you have excellent grades and great ECs you are still a viable candidate for the spot- expecially if you have taken the Chem AP and done well on that. So though it is a blemish on your record, I don't think it will be enough to eliminate you.

I was curious, how much the Northwestern undergraduate application (the weird essays, etc) bear on the HPME admission?

not very much

MailN4hrs, how did your son get that research program as I am interested in applying, what are the requirements and how do you get in?

what the heck do we write for a personal history guys ?

i wrote about some of the activities i am involved in and why i want to be a doctor

buckwald: how long was your personal history essay, (how many pages, double or single spaced) ? Because wouldn't two pages single spaced be four times the size of one page double spaced...

thanks for your feedback buckwald =D

Mine was 1.5 pages single spaced.

can someone explain how to fill out the subject chart, under grades you put A, B, C, D, or F right? And under the major subject titles you put the name of your coureses that fit under that subject? What if you have more courses than spaces for coureses? And what is the weeks per year supposed to mean? Should you just put 18 weeks for a semester course, and 36 for a year course?

hey guys. i just started reading this thread and i have a few questions.
buckwald- what kinda stuff does hpme look for? do they like STATS and stuff more, or do they like extracurriculars/personality and essay/interview stuff?
also just out of curiosity, what did y'all write for ur personal history essays?
thanks!

Yes, you put A,B,C,D,or F under grades. Yes, under major subject titles you put the names of your courses. If you have more courses than spaces for courses (as I had 3 years of Bio), you can put it all the end, after all the science courses, (if I remember correctly) I think there are 3 lines for other courses. Weeks/Year means exactly that, they want to know whether it was for a semester/year/2 years (for some IB Diploma course)/3 year continuation program (some other international programs like the German Abitur).

Hope this helps.

For personal history essay, I wrote about my educational history (moving and so on), community service involvement since an early age, motivation + reason for wanting to be a doctor, and why Northwestern HPME is THE ideal program for me.

hope this helps.

hey buckwald, or anyone else:

is it okay if we send an additional recommendation and/or abstract to hpme? will it hurt or help our chances?
