Northwestern, Rice, et cetera

Honestly, I have no idea what I'm going to major in, and the amount of financial aid is not a big factor in my decision-making process. I'm thinking about applying ED to either Northwestern or Rice (next in line are Emory and Notre Dame). I want to apply early to whichever one I have a better chance of being admitted to (sad, I know.. don't ostracize me for being fed up and wanting to get this whole thing over with). That being said, here are my stats.

Job:
-I've worked at a smoothie store and movie theater. I'm currently employed at Subway (15~20 hrs/wk).

My EC's are inconsistent due to the unexpected transfer after my sophomore year. It was either too late to join something, or the new school didn't have the same clubs, or the transfer student rule kept me from participating in certain activities (i.e. sports). However, I did get leadership positions in a few clubs after just one year at the new school; maybe that's a plus? Also, I plan on getting teacher recommendations from one teacher at the old school and another teacher at the new school.

Whew! Thanks for reading all of that. Do you think I have any chance at NU and Rice if I apply ED? If so, which one should I choose and why?

I think you have a good shot at Rice. Rice also has an ID period which may give you some options.

yea i think you will be a strong candidate if you back up your stats w/ excellent essays.

you have to really think about which school will be the best for you...but both Northwestern and Rice are excellent schools, just differ on location.

I live in suburbs of Atlanta, GA as well...what school do you attend???

I'm leaning towards Northwestern because it's a bigger school. If I could ED Northwestern and EA/ID Rice, that would be stellar. Sammo, I'd like to keep the rest of my personal info to myself and stay anonymous since, you know, all my stats are out there.

When you do ED, you can't apply anywhere else EA, ED, or ID. So unfortunately that won't work out. You could do EA/ID at Rice and then RD at NW though.

Yes, at most schools including HY, you can ID because it is not binding. I don't know the rules at NW.

I was under the impression that you COULD do one ED and the rest EA. Because acccording to "the rules", if you are accepted ED you have to immediately withdraw your request to go to other schools. EA is not binding, therefor it seems as though you could withdraw at any time.

Yes, NU allows you to ea to other places. I was planning on applying ED there as well, so I called them up awhile ago just to check on their policy.

Woohoo. Awesome.

Oh ok, my mistake

Well, at least that in NU's policy. I am not sure about Rice though. It is possible that they might not allow you to apply ea there if you apply ed somewhere else. Wow, this is starting to sound confusing. Anyways, just to make sure to call up Rice and ask about their policy just to make sure. I would hate to be responsible for giving you misleading information. Sorry if I got your hopes up. All I knew about was NU, not Rice.

H and Y are Single Choice Early Action, which clearly states that you maynot apply to any other early program, whether it is binding or not. Other EA and ED programs may have their own rules. Rice is binding ED, but not binding ID, and H and Y allow ID apps that are not binding. I would think that you could go ED to NW and ID to Rice, but you would be bound to NW if accepted.
