They said they give roughly 50 deferrals a year, so it’s rare that anyone gets deferred.

Everything in the world has positives and negatives to it.

For those rejected, while one does not get the positives of NU, one also does not get the the unique negatives of NU.

For the NU supp essay you had to write of the positives and exclude the negatives. For those rejected, you can take refuge that you will not have to suffer the negatives.

The more I looked into NU, I saw a litany of negatives that NU had but I’ll not say them here. Son is free of them at least. It’s rainin’ at Sox park now; but we do have an umbrella.

@Destroyer, I think I just heard you’re a graduating Junior. I also graduated young back in the day, and my sage advice to you is that while you’re at NU be sure to remember to stop and smell the roses – maybe by doing a standup routine in a local comedy club! ;-)

Will there be a “Class of 2015” thread starting soon?

FYI: NU started to give about 50 deferrals/yr two years ago and deferred applicants had significantly higher admit rates than the RD applicants. If memory serves me well, the rates were around 50%.

A couple quick questions;

1) Any idea when FA info will arrive? I assume we wait to pull all other aps until seeing that, correct?

2) Was there any mention of your specific major in your letter? For example, I think DD’s letter just said Communications versus Theatre.

You did not celebrate alone Destroyer, we are very excited for you! And thank you for all the kind words for my daughter and her bf who did not make it. Now we wait for U of M, they should get in there no problem. Maybe we’ll see you at a football game someday!? Do they still play eachother with the changes in the Big 10?

Sam Lee- I believe they only deferred 27 students last year out of ED, if memory serves, and they make it very clear that they are deferring for grades and no other reason. If anyone reading this was deferred, they want to see you “rock” your senior year grades.

Does anyone know the answer to momcares’ Question? When does FA arrive because it’s EXTREMELY important to us!

@ Averby: Same here. I think you have to fill out your fafsa first. But, I was informed by my friend that Northwestern gives a lot of aid, but that’s just one experience.

Hmmm… if we really have to wait until we finish FAFSA to get an FA package, does that mean DD should go ahead and submit her final 2 aps so she doesn’t miss those deadlines on the off chance we can’t swing the tuition?

I thought they sent an initial FA package sooner (which is why you do the CSS Profile) then finalize it after the FAFSA?

@corncake and @Momcares awesome!! I love how even though NU is in the midwest (which is where I am from) most of the applicants aren’t. I am very excited to meet people who have grown up elsewhere in the country!

I wonder how many Theatre majors were accepted ED this year. I think there are at least 5 from CC so far…

If that is true, I can say I have no idea what I’m talking about and that I’m not too worried about it-not because I don’t need financial aid, but because both of my friends that went there had great aid.

To others who got deferred like me:

what was the trend of your grades over the years? mine were a good bit lower my freshman year than my sophomore year, and my junior year was higher than both of the previous years. anyone else have a similar grade trajectory? i think they’re waiting to see my first semester grades to make sure it wasn’t a fluke, maybe, based on what other people are saying and other things i’ve read. that makes my finals next week all the more stressful :-(

@weeturtle I’m from Connecticut so everyone around here is basically applying to Ivys and think that all the best colleges are in the northeast…I disagreed and am one of the few that applied everywhere outside of New England I specifically wanted a college experience with people from around the country and I am so excited to meet all of you next year =)

p.s. did anyone else immediately set their computer background to the Northwestern logo? It is bright purple and every time I see it I am like WOW I’m in COLLEGE!

IamJAMMIN-which of the colleges did you apply to?
Do take a deep breath and get studying for those finals! These first semester grades will carry a lot of weight in moving your deferral to an RD acceptance. Very few kids get deferred, and NU is a school which doesn’t mess around deferring kids for all kinds of reasons-they are straight forward in saying that they want to see your senior year grades.

it was medill.

To those asking about financial aid: the package comes “around the same time” as as your physical admission decision letter.

@IamJammin

I was deferred too. My grades my freshman and first half of my sophomore year were not good but I had a huge huge jump after that. I am very fortunate that I have kicked butt my first semester of senior year and feel very very confident in those grades. I hope the both of us get in during the next round! But I am definitely feeling the pressure now for exams. One more week to go!
