Not a great dancer.. does this lower my chances of getting in?

Hi there. I’m new :)

University of Michigan is a university I DREAM of getting in!! I know it’s a hard choice, but better to try out than not at all…
I’m 16 and I would say that I’m strongest in singing and acting, but dancing is definitely my weakest.
I take jazz and musical theatre dance and tap. It’s quite hard for me to pick up steps quickly (in my opinion)

If my singing and acting audition goes well, but my dancing audition goes horrible, does that mean I probably won’t get in?

Is their main focus on dancing? singing? Or just all three? Cause if that is… yikes!!

Which universities focus on mainly singing?

Sorry for all these questions!
(Btw I don’t live in the States so I want to audition for universities I have a chance of getting in…)

bwayjunkie - as you actually may have read by now in other threads on this board, I am afraid that UMich is one of those programs that puts quite a bit of emphasis on dance.

It has been said that you should be strong in 2 out of the 3 components of musical theatre, and so if you are a really good singer and actor, you don't necessarily have to be an advanced dancer to get accepted. Not being to pick up the steps relatively quickly, can be a potential "deal breaker" however, and so I think it would be really smart to start looking at adding some more "dream schools" to your list, just in case :D.

After reading CC for a few years prior to embarking on her journey, my own D, who went through this process last year, kept looking at all the schools she applied to as "number one schools", and that definitely made things easier, rather than "putting all your eggs in one basket". Yes, deep down inside, she did have a dream school too, but she worked hard on setting that aside, because this process is so incredibly competitive, and you just never know how many girls similar in type & strength are trying out.

There is a lot of valuable information on this board; take some time to read some threads. You will find that there also programs where there are no dance auditions altogether, and many programs that look for potential, rather than 'expertise', in voice, acting and dance.

Thanks for your quick reply!

Boston Conservatory is also a school I aspire to get into, and a few in Australia as that is the country of my nationality :D
I'm not THAT bad in dance, but in my dance studio, it is really competitive and I feel like the worst in my class because everyone there is AMAZING :(soooo yeah.
(I can pick up steps well, at least not in my dance class! Sorry for the misunderstanding. The only good thing about my dancing is my pirouettes. HAHA!!)

I definitely have a wide range of schools I intend on applying to. Some in the US, and some in Australia (WAAPA, VCA etc.)

That sounds exciting, I don't know much about the programs in Australia, but did visit and really loved your country.

Good luck with your research, and like I mentioned before, there is a ton of information on this board. I don't know how I would have been able to support my D (or even understand what she was planning on doing) had it not been for all the nice people that post here!

Keep us posted ;)!
