Not ANOTHER chances thread??

Yes, another chances thread :p

I live in SD and I really don't want to leave, so my 1st choice school is UCSD.

GPA- 4.0 weighted (I had low sophomore grades and high junior grades, after I got my act together)

SAT- 2070 (730 math, 690 reading, 650 writing, 8 essay)

SAT II- Haven't taken them just yet

Extra Curricular-
2nd Degree Black Belt/ instructor (I teach kids taekwondo)
Volunteer at Alvarado Hospital
Varsity soccer/ Hotspurs club soccer (goalkeeper)
President of Recycling Club
Peer tutoring
I'm really good at Xbox

EDIT: Forgot to say, I am Scottish-American (dual-citizenship). I'm sure it doesn't matter, but I'm just tossing that out there.

It’s too hard to say whether you’ll get in or not. The SAT score is ok, and the GPA isn’t bad, but you haven’t taken the SAT II’s and you didn’t say how many hours you have spent volunteering/how many years you have spent in E.C. activities. Based solely on the info you provided, I would say you have a good chance of getting in, but it’s not a sure thing.

i think you have a pretty good chance of getting in, especially with those extra-curriculars, but your SAT II scores will probably make or break it. i got in with a lower GPA and a slightly lower SAT score, but i scored an 800 on the math level 2.

just keep it up senior year and you should get a spot. and definitely try to sign up for the first date that the SAT IIs are offered so you have time to figure out if you need to take them again. an 800 will make a huge difference.

you have a good shot

you are guaranteed admission because you are really good at xbox… :-P

I see you getting in for Winter quarter right now. But if you get at least a 750 on two of your SAT IIs, I think you should be fall admission

@ Aviboy really? My SATs and ECs were terrible, i mean like below the average standard, and I got accepted in UCSD and Jacobs. ELC really helps you here since UCSD accepts a high percent of them.

The question is either a yes or no. There is no 90% or 80%, a chance is still a chance, 50-50.

I believe your profile is good, but make yourself stand out, ie: why are you tutoring, is it a way for you to get a hands on experience on teaching? You seem like you like teaching kids, is that something you would like to delve into? Emphasize on what you want to do in your essay as well as tie in your one “epic” tragedy in your life and how it revolutionized your life in your essay ofc.

@Christian

I really do think thats how it is. Though you may have ELC right now, we dont know if Zippidy is. The thing is, I had a 4.1, 2120 SAT, 720 and 700 on Bio and Math 2 for academics (I wasnt ELC). For my ECs, I founded 2 clubs, was President 3 clubs, NHS member and officer for many years, Varsity tennis for 2 years JV for 1, Over 500 hours of volunteer, etc etc etc. And I had a family issue.

Yet, despite all of this, I still only got into Winter. When I talked to them, they said that had my SAT IIs been higher, I would have gotten into winter.

So when I say he should have at least a 750, I’m saying it so he/she is on the safe side of getting into Fall

Well, I’m attending UCSD for the 2009 fall quarter, under Bioengineering: Pre-Med, and my SAT scores were:
SAT Reasoning: 1810 (Should have took classes haha)
SAT II Math Level II: 600 (yeah)
SAT II Biology: 710
SAT II US History: 710

Final GPA, including the accepted weights: 4.37

So my SAT scores were definitely on the low side, but my GPA made up for that. The University also recognizes that many kids take classes for the SAT and they’re looking at it with less importance than they used to (according to my friend’s mom who works with admissions at UCLA). Thus said, your GPA is right around the average of admitted students, with your SAT being higher. I’d say with a good essay, that relates to where you want to go in your life, and with your EC’s I think you have a great chance in getting in for even the fall quarter.

As a final note, I’m hoping to write my essays on my taiwanese heritage and/or maybe some experiences I’ve had at one of my extracurrics–not too sure at the moment.

I know my GPA is kinda low, especially relative to other UCSD admits, but I’m hoping desperately that my other achievements might increase my chances.

Thanks for the help!

Just so you know, everyone writes about his/her heritage. Like, really, everyone.
Haha, you guys are gonna hate BioE…
